Thank you Southern Shorts Awards 💚✨

“Climate Change And... brings up important issues like community and assistance in the wake of weather centric disasters. At least that’s where I think I’m going but instead the film gets softer and gives more of a personal perspective through Dayna the director’s participation. *The mountain vista footage must be stock. I enjoyed it and admired the cavalier grass roots approach and how it gives a good feel to the film.”

“This short doc does a great job of showcasing a community rebuilding itself after devastation and decline. I loved seeing the people coming together and sharing their stories. I really did enjoy the film and would like to see more like it.”

“I found the overall film to be very thorough and interesting especially on a topic I was not familiar with. Due to the way in which the film was presented, I actually wanted to know even more as you presented the individuals in the group very well and their goals in a compelling and engaging manner.”

* the beautiful mountain vistas were real drone shots not stock haha 🤣❤️

Listen to Your Mother

“Most of us go through life feeling unheard,” says documentary filmmaker and environmentalist Dayna Reggero. “I think that is why I began my listening journey, to offer what I needed.” Reggero is the founder and head of the Climate Listening Project, whose mission is to travel the world to hear and share stories from people struggling with environmental preservation due to industrialization, overfishing, drilling, and other human-induced crises that threaten ecosystems and ways of life. Listening to those whose voices often fall on deaf ears has allowed Reggero to amplify and spread stories that can affect real change and help save Mother Nature and the people who live in harmony with her. “I found listening isn’t only healing for those being heard, listening is healing for me, too,” Reggero shares.

As part of the Jane Goodall Institute’s fortieth anniversary, the Climate Listening Project was featured in the organization’s Hope in Action campaign, which highlights things that can be accomplished today to promote a planet where humans, other animals, and the environment live in harmony. “Dr. Jane Goodall always said everything is connected—everyone can make a difference!” Reggero says. “The people I’ve met as a result of being inspired by Dr. Goodall have given me hope. I am honored to be a documentarian and to continue to listen with Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy of Hope in Action in mind. I’ve been privileged to meet and share the work of other climate listeners, including Roishetta Ozane in Louisiana, Paula Swepson in North Carolina, and Amanda Abbott on Scenic Highway 30A in Florida.”

Join us Friday for a First Site Visit to @westmarioninc’s Resilience Hub! Director Paula Swepson is a Keynote Speaker at McDowell Chamber of Commerce Annual Legislative Gathering (11am-1pm) and we will convene at the building directly following (148 East Hudgins Street, Marion, NC).

The West Marion Resilience Hub will partner with the City of Marion to breathe new life into the historic Hudgins High/Mountain View School, a treasured African-American institution, transforming it into a 66,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art mixed-use community center. This project not only honors the legacy of our ancestors but also reimagines this iconic building as a beacon of resilience and progress. The center will serve as a vital resource, offering essential services such as behavioral health support, healthcare, childcare, and workforce development. By addressing critical issues like public health, food insecurity, and transportation barriers, the hub will foster both environmental sustainability and socio-economic growth. Importantly, the hub will also function as an emergency shelter during climate-related disasters, providing a safe haven equipped with trauma-informed medical services and mutual aid support. This transformation honors the past while paving the way for a brighter, more resilient future for all.

“It’s 4am and my wife and I just finished hand-washing the Majorette uniforms that the Hillcrest High Stepping Majorettes and Drum Corp. Last wore more than 10 years ago. I remember my father doing the same thing. The house smelling of Downy and Tide, the Uniforms sparkling after the 3rd rinse, the drip of the water as the uniforms air dryed. I am amazed that he did this until his late 70’s.... I miss him so much.
As we move into the next chapter with the new generation that has never witnessed the sounds of the drums and the precision of the routines of the Hillcrest High Stepping Majorettes exceled at everytime we performed, I am honored to have the priviledge of leading the” John R. Hayes High Steppin’ Majorette and Drum Corp.” Yes it’s a new name but the same philosophy. We will strive for Excellence with an understanding that “the greatest love of all is inside of me.” Our youth need you to cheer them on and show them how bright their future is.“
