What a weekend. 🧗‍♀️💙 Thank you to EVERYONE who made the Canadian Para Climbing Summit happen.
To the Canadian Paralympic Committee @cdnparalympics and the Government of Canada, our primary sponsors for the weekend: none of this happens without you.

To @mitchelleyecentre and @sunbeltrentals for their generous sponsorship, and to @mec Calgary, and @metricclimbing for donating comp prizes and equipment for the weekend. 🧗‍♀️

To @calgaryclimbing and Chris Neve for being such generous and gracious hosts all weekend, and to Mark Kozak, Jacquelyn Mitchell, and @maelleclimbs and @acaclimbs for your support in running the comp and promoting the weekend.

To @janecuff, @stclimbingot, @betaninja.coaching, @peronacelaura, @guillaume_tousignant_me, @pattihoddinott17, @blindape2023, @gibbz.jpg , @gimpin.and.still.crimpin, @shamus.b.climbing, and @mountainshoulders for running the workshops all weekend. To @kevin_bolusi, @victoria____player, @emm_mcdermott, @markherbison and
@nicolassabia who travelled to Calgary and kept the stoke high to make this weekend a success. And to all the coaches, volunteers, judges, and attendees who came out to support us: thank you!

To @nikoncanada , @beyondboundariesfilm, @artsnb whose prize pack and grants have carried us from the BanffPitch competition at last year’s @banffmountainfestival to present day and to @burdockcreative, whose stoke has stayed high all year to capture every moment.

To EVERY person who donated, supported, bought merch, gave their time, knowledge, and resources throughout the year - a separate post is coming for you all.

@madequay, who arranged and prepared all the food, flew to Calgary because “I seemed overwhelmed,” and kept us running all weekend. ❤️

@buckwartrussell who has been a constant quiet support in every way possible and who has literally hand fed me several times this year to make sure I ate. 💕

And finally to @nicolassabia who has been the best hype man for this whole ride, who stepped in and took over the moment sleep deprivation finally caught up with me. And to @abweimer for sharing him with me ! 🪽

I’m so grateful for this community. ❤️

There's something fitting about @alannah_yip's Olympic climbing shoes ending up here.

More than 130 years before Alannah represented Canada at the Tokyo Olympics, her great-great-grandfather Yip Sang built the Wing Sang Building in Vancouver's Chinatown. Today, that same building is home to the Chinese Canadian Museum, and the shoes she wore on the Olympic stage are now part of "Momentum: Power and Identity in Sports".

Alannah grew up in North Vancouver and started climbing when she was six. By 12, she had won her first national title. Her path to the Olympics wasn't always a straight climb — she stepped away from the sport for a year and a half at UBC before returning to pursue both.

By 2017, she had become the first Canadian woman to reach an IFSC World Cup final. Three years later, she won gold at the Pan American Championships in Los Angeles, earning her ticket to Tokyo. When sport climbing made its Olympic debut in 2021, Alannah was there representing Canada. She set a Canadian speed record of 7.99 seconds and finished 14th overall. She later added a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.

To date, Alannah remains the only Canadian woman to have competed in sport climbing at the Olympics.

Alannah has used her platform to advocate for greater inclusion in sport, speaking out against anti-Asian racism and sharing her experience with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.

She has spoken openly about living with alopecia and the vulnerability she felt competing internationally after losing her hair. Over time, she began sharing that experience publicly after hearing from others, including parents of children with alopecia, who told her it helped them feel more comfortable with themselves.

Alannah is also a descendant of Won Alexander Cumyow, the first recorded person of Chinese descent born in what is now Canada and a longtime advocate for Chinese Canadian rights.

Now, a piece of that history has come back to the Wing Sang Building.

See Alannah Yip's Olympic climbing shoes in "Momentum: Power and Identity in Sports", on view until September 5, 2027.
