Movement changes when we stop thinking about tissues as something to simply stretch or strengthen.

One of the models we use at The Movement Standard views tissue through four qualities:

• Stiff — creating structure and stability.
• Tensile — starting to yield and adapt to change
• Elastic — storing and returning energy.
• Colloidal — fluid, responsive, and able to reorganize while dissipating energy

Rather than chasing a single quality, practice becomes learning when each one is useful. Sometimes we need more structure while other times we need more adaptability, more recoil, or more fluidity.

Many of our current lower body practices are designed around exploring these different tissue qualities. The goal isn’t simply greater flexibility or strength but it’s developing a body with more options. The richer our movement vocabulary becomes, the more appropriately we can meet the demands placed on us.

Alignment is often reduced to posture or finding the “correct” position, but a position, by itself, tells us very little.

A body can look aligned while relying on unnecessary tension, and it can look poorly positioned while still being well organized.

What we are interested in creating is improved organization.

Sometimes the quickest way to improve that organization is through a thoughtful constraint. A wall, the floor, an object, or a partner can all simplify the problem. They reduce the number of variables and make it easier to notice what we normally miss.

In the case of developing the Handstand, the wall or floor isn’t correcting us but is offering feedback and becomes a potent teacher. It exposes where we lose connection, where we compensate, and where a different possibility begins to become available.

The aim isn’t to become dependent on the constraint but to develop qualities that remain when the constraint is removed.

Practice itself becomes less about finding perfect alignment and more about becoming capable of organizing yourself across an ever-growing range of situations.

CONSTRUCTING MOVEMENT
Fall Immersion | October 17–18

In the spring, we deconstructed movement, this Fall we’ll be moving in the other direction, with construction.

Constructing Movement is a weekend immersion at The Movement Standard exploring how movement, skill, and practice are built from the ground up. We’ll spend our time together looking at how isolated pieces become patterns, how patterns become skills, and how skill becomes what we are.

Foundational patterns
Skill-building constraints
Uncommon strength
Partner and object work
Stillness and integration

The aim is to better understand how movement is organized, practiced, and developed over time, how is practice architected from the bottom up?

This immersion is for anyone who wants to deepen their relationship to practice beyond and the body, and for those who recognize that important connection on our day to day experience.

Why ground movement?

Because the floor creates movement problems we rarely meet elsewhere. Organizing the body against gravity in a new way and offering unique constraints gives a set of challenges that is hard to create elsewhere. Add a partner and you’ve got a real gem of a practice.

The entry sequence to Belmont Bungalow takes you through carefully partitioned outdoor spaces, with aged stone spheres and custom east texas cedar fences guiding you along. This arrangement is only possible because the mid-century house, unlike its 1910’s/1920’s neighbors, is set at the very back of its lot. You’re ultimately greeted by vintage doors with tons of character that we sourced via @orr_reed. By the time you’re inside, you feel as though you’ve been transported to a private refuge, which is just what our client wanted.

Our goal and path is not about being multidisciplinary, it’s about becoming integrated.

Many people hear the word integrated and assume it means combining multiple disciplines together. A little yoga, some strength training, mobility work, martial arts, dance, breathwork, maybe a somatic practice. While there can be value in exposure to many disciplines, integration is not the same thing as accumulation.

An integrated approach moves beyond the disciplines themselves.Rather than collecting methods, techniques, and systems, it begins to recognize the underlying principles that give rise to them. This is something we focus on within our M.O.D.A.S framework.

At that point the disciplines no longer appear separate. They become different expressions of the same deeper essence.

A movement practice should not feel fragmented but should have the feel that things are coming together, that there is a certain coherence or order that makes sense. Not many practices, but one practice seen through many lenses.

Here are a few perspectives we’ve been working on recently. New schedule starts Monday with increased options to practice with us.

Some impressions from The Simmering Mind Maze at Twelve Thirty Four in Dallas, Texas this fall—my first solo show in the USA and a return to my installation practice. The works explore complexity and interconnection: objects that defy gravity, tilt into motion, and remain continually suspended in flux. Provocative and whimsical, a 'pure expression of storytelling,' the exhibition harnesses communication, collaboration, and interaction—three concepts at the core of my practice—building what I hope feels like a drawing you can walk through.

The show is also a portrait of Patricio, his beautiful Boutique, and my time in Dallas. It features:

✨ Magic sticks — interrogating representations of power
✨ New watercolors — formal explorations of looseness, layering, and transparency

On the way back to NYC and have an opportunity to reflect on the last couple of weeks. Although I was late to the party, I had the most amazing experience learning from @portal.ido and @odeliagold at the Thailand Movement Intensive. I must admit, I didn’t know exactly what I was getting into other than “movement” and “Thailand” and I am incredibly grateful for this intensive. Not only did I get to explore physically new things with movement but mentally got to explore different concepts and ideas about our bodies and minds and the human experience that spans across time. What it means to be a teacher, what it means to be a student, what practice entails, WHAT IS LIFE and other small things like that 😉 (my mind is still buzzing)
I got to meet the most amazing people from all over and feel as though I’ve expanded my community. Thank you everyone 🙏🏻
This whole trip took me out of my comfort zone, in ways in which I haven’t felt in a long time. After the intensive I got to explore a bit on my own and met some more amazing people to round out the final days of my trip. This has been a dream place for me to visit for quite some time and I am so happy the stars aligned. I’m in my feels about it, I’m sad to leave, but I know I’ll be back. Thank you for all the lessons, connections and experiences ♥️

As Dr Andrew Huberman notes, “Cold is a powerful stimulus for changing your biology. In recent years there have been a number of quality research studies in humans that define specific protocols to enhance mental and physical health and performance.”

But having that information is different than implementing it into your life. And different than creating a daily practice or routine that turns that information into beneficial lifestyle choices.

So that’s what we are doing here at @movementstandard. We have created an environment where you can join us to share and implement this practice into your own life.

You can find education on this stuff very easily, but it is difficult to recreate the environment and have consistent application without any of the wasted missteps all by yourself.

So, join us starting July 10 - August 4. For 4 weeks of guided practice in cold exposure, breath work, movement and more. $150 per person. Monday/Wednesday/Friday 7:30 a 8:30am at @movementstandard.

Movement Sunrise Series, an opportunity to practice and establish healthy biological rhythms through simple yet scientifically proven methods.

We are committing one month of morning practice to developing tools that can be used create more movement, increase overall adaptability, improve circulation and clarity, promote readiness for the day(s) ahead. Rooted in physiological principles we will be providing a protocols that target key areas related to improving overall health and robustness.

Each session will within it have specific movement, breath-work, Sun and cold exposure, as well as education on key lifestyle factors like sleep, nutrition, and stillness.
