A welcoming entrance makes all the difference. From the winding garden path to the surrounding greenery, every element works together to create a beautiful first impression.

@clitesarchitects A stone pathway leads through a lush garden with various plants and grasses. A stone wall lines the path, and a house with large windows is visible in the background. Sunlight filters through the trees, enhancing the serene atmosphere.

The rear garden of this Bethesda house makes great use of a tight space.

Because the backyard slopes steeply down toward the house, the pool is tucked directly into the hillside.

A raised stone beam cuts across a curved wall with integrated pool scuppers, while a grassy path running along the back wall doubles as a dedicated dog run.

We’re in the home stretch on this one 🏡

Carpenter Beach is wrapping up an addition and renovations to this home in collaboration with Clites Architects, while Black Pearl Management puts the finishing touches on the landscaping outside. It’s been great watching everything come together, and we’re excited to share the finished project soon 🔨

The best seats in the house are often the ones that invite you to stay a little longer. Warm colors and an intimate scale in this cozy breakfast nook creates a welcoming space layered with comfort, texture, and timeless charm.

Architect Timothy Clites founded @clitesarchitects in Middleburg, Virginia, in 2011. Clites and a staff of six design architecture in the DMV in a “team first” process that fosters relationships with interior designers, landscape architects, builders and tradespeople. “Our work seeks to blend simplicity and regional architectural vocabularies into designs grounded in our clients’ aspirations,” Clites says. “Our most important core value is engaging as a team—design, construction and clients—to create a positive environment where projects thrive and results shine.”

On a farm in Marshall, Virginia, a Civil War-era log cabin is getting a second life - on the very land where it was originally built.

But restoring a structure like this isn't as simple as renovating what's there. The cabin is being carefully dismantled by hand. Every individual log is photographed, tagged and removed before being cleaned and evaluated. Logs are repaired whenever possible and replaced when necessary. Then, the cabin will be reconstructed on a new foundation using techniques appropriate to the era.

It's like a 160-year-old puzzle - where every piece has a history, and exactly where it belongs matters.

DUHRING is proud to be working alongside @clitesarchitects on this remarkable preservation project for a wonderful longtime client in Marshall.

Some projects are about creating something entirely new. This one is
about making sure something worth keeping is still standing for the next generation.

Every backyard needs a place to end the day. At this Bethesda residence, that place is a bluestone terrace set just off the lawn, where four navy Adirondack chairs circle a fire bowl by @lumacaststudio.

The pergola and pool complete the sequence of spaces, each area reading as its own room while sharing one material palette.

At this recently completed Bethesda residence, the entry garden is framed by a custom stone wall built with veneer from a local quarry.

Centered on the front bay window, a passthrough of bluestone steppers and monolithic steps leads to a garden bench, surrounded by ‘Annabelle’ hydrangeas, ‘Green Velvet’ boxwoods, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials.

Nestled into the slope, a charming garden shed serves as a pool house and focal point for this Bethesda residence.

The outdoor living space centers around a pool, where a curved stone gravity wall seamlessly intersects with a modern wall–complete with three scuppers that create a sheer water descent.
