A huge well done to all of this year’s nominees and winners at the 45th News and Doc Emmys. #ScoutsHonor sadly didn’t win in its category of Outstanding Investigative Documentary but we were thrilled the film was part of this year’s mix. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this film on and off camera, @netflix for all the support and kudos to the brilliant work of our partners at @luminantmedia and @insightfilmuk.

Sharing three docs I've loved recently and very much recommend you watch.

[More info and links on my Linkedin page - I couldn't fit it all in here on Insta]

*** APOLLO 13: SURVIVAL
I’m not into space films or space stories but I was completely taken with this feature doc directed by Pete Middleton. It’s an intricately, beautifully made film which manages to maintain the focus on the main story while utilising many layers of different material and ultimately bringing this all together into one coherent whole film.

-> The Financial Times review says “The new film is a different beast. Not just a documentary, it is a juddering collage of archive footage, some never seen before, subtly laced with artful reconstructions. Life and death hang in the balance amid vintage buzz and crackle.”
-> The Guardian review says: “a real, rare and breathtaking tale of survival and ingenuity, clearly and painstakingly told.”
-> Watch this film on Netflix

*** PRETTY BABY: BROOKE SHIELDS
This is a two-part doc series directed by Lana Wilson. This is a fascinating documentary that manages to be a true, authentic biopic about Brooke Shields whilst also weaving in the socio-political context in which her life played out – and was dominated by. It’s incredible to see how sexualised Brooke was as a young girl but ultimately there was something very inspiring and uplifting about seeing the woman she has become today.

-> The New York Times "Critic’s Pick" and NY Times says “Before Shields even hit puberty, the media had taken to framing her as either a Lolita or a demure darling — a Catch-22 that Wilson, through interviews with journalists and other actresses, positions within a history of Hollywood exploitation. Trapped in this binary, Shields failed to crystallize her identity until college, and the film’s second half traces her road to self-realization thereafter.”
-> Variety says: “A Documentary of Fascinating Depth"
-> Watch it on Disney+

*** LOVE HAS WON: THE CULT OF MOTHER GOD
This is a three-part doc series about a cult in America which contains some of the wildest scenes and memorable lines I’ve ever seen in an observational documentary. More on Linkedin!

APOLLO 13: SURVIVAL is released today on Netflix! Some great reviews coming in already:

"a real, rare and breathtaking tale of survival and ingenuity"

"an incredibly authentic, unique and gripping retelling of one of history’s greatest survival stories."

"Some stories are worth retelling, particularly when they are as well told as this"

"In “Apollo 13: Survival,” Middleton emphasizes not just the clock-ticking suspense but the emotion and larger philosophical musings"

Can't thank our amazing team enough. What a crew and what an incredible journey we've been on with our partners at Fee Fie Foe. Huge thanks to @netflix for being such unwavering and enthusiastic supporters of the project. And our utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Lovell family who have been so kind and generous to us through the whole production.

This is nice. Honoured to have played a small part in this powerful film. Brilliant work from director @knappenbergerbrian, producer @clive.patterson and the teams at Luminante Media, @insightfilmuk, @grainmedia and @netflix. I hope this brings more attention to the courage of those who spoke out against abuse, and decades of cover ups at The Boy Scouts of America. #scoutshonor

Survivors, whistleblowers and experts recount the decades long cover-up of sexual abuse within the Boy Scouts — and its heartbreaking impact — in Scouts Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America.

I’m in awe of the extraordinary courage of those willing to speak out and honoured to have served as an executive producer on the film. Congratulations to director @knappenbergerbrian, producer @clive.patterson and the teams at @luminantmedia, @insightfilms.tv and @grainmedia. Coming to @netflix on 6th September! #scoutshonor
