Thank you so much for all the kind words and love for This Is Not An Exit 🙏 it’s a very special song to us. Even more so because of how lucky we are to have @lisahannigan lending her beautiful voice to it!

The brief to Lisa was rather short (close to “here are the sections we’d love you sing in” 😂) when we heard this section for the first time, it was the first time we’d heard the song feel close to completion. Not only did she sing the verse but she coloured in the gaps with this incredibly wistful call and response! She’s without doubt the GOAT!!

Good Monday to thee.

We wanted to bring your attention to a song that almost didn’t make the album.

Most of our songs form in an oaky, non-digital land of togetherness. This one felt stuck, but shiny enough to dig for. So, for the first time, we opened the digital sphere (NOT AI, JUST LOGIC PRO) and Plug-in’d into the darkness. At first it felt like a departure from ourselves. In hindsight, it was a refreshing derailment.

A new sound brought a new challenge lyrically. There felt like no place for storytellyness, so we followed cryptic memory corridors and let meaning assemble itself.

Ollie was going through life-altering changes around this song, including discovering his ADHD diagnosis. An answer to a lifelong question brought relief, but also the weight of wondering why so much confusion and difficulty had gone unexplained for so long. Somehow, this song became a magnet for those feelings and memories.

Throughout this album, we kept returning to imagery of doorways: closed, open, revolving. This song screamed departure, but became an entrance to something new.

Hence: This Is Not An Exit.

As we’ve said 1000 times before, the collaborations on this album would not have been possible without @soundsfromasafeharbour festival, & this song is certainly no exception.

We shared a backstage with @lisahannigan for one of the most beautifully emotional moments of the festival. Among tears, embraces, and a week of shared words, smiles and passing in hallways, it became clear this song needed a voice with haunting, gentle power. A voice that could soothe the present whilst guiding you through memory.

NO ONE does that better than Lisa Hannigan.

We could not be more grateful that she agreed to be part of this. It was recorded through the ether, but when those stems came back, we were tearful. Her voice gave this song its breath.

And finally, a cosmic little joke: above is a picture of a signed record Lisa gave Jack before he recorded his first ever record that never saw the light of day and now she’s singing on our bloody song with us.

Well by Jove, lovely friends… our third baby, ‘Jera’, has officially left our tight, withered mitts and is available to devour.

We sincerely didn’t know if this album would happen. We just felt stuck and didn’t want to churn something out of obligation. Early-30s life starting families, moving houses, jobs that slowly kill you, etc. alters the way you water your creativity garden. So we stepped back.

Then stagnancy ushered passion to scratch at our doors, demanding to be let in!

RESTLESS TO BE SAD TOGETHER AGAIN!

We watched the world screaming, until each song that tiptoed out felt like a powerful whisper of gratitude for feeling, acknowledgement and fighting to exist meaningfully.

Jera became less about untangling life’s contradictions and more about accepting we have no business untangling them. Joy can exist beside sorrow. Hope can survive uncertainty. Fear can sit beside love. Trying to carry them all with a lil more tenderness.

@soundsfromasafeharbour inspired this album into existence. It was here we met Ólafur Arnalds in 2023. He, Hildur, Árni and the @opiacommunity backed our dusty old voice memos and sent the boys to Iceland to make a record. We can’t thank you enough for your belief. 💙

To @matthiashfranzhahn & @timbidwell thank you for your endless enthusiasm, loyalty, patience and friendship. You kept this ship afloat.

To @niamhreganmusic , @lisahannigan , @olafurarnalds , @dustinohalloran , @samamidon , @maxmaxporter , & every musician who lent their hearts to these songs… thank you. We feel incredibly lucky.

We sincerely hope Jera finds you gently. Wherever you are, whatever you’re carrying, we hope these songs keep you company for a little while. 🟦

“Rest (& be thankful)” by @friendsofmemorial ft @niamhreganmusic is out now.💫

The song didn't arrive with a clear intention. It grew from a series of quiet signals, feelings and images that kept pointing toward the same thing: slow down. It followed a period where the momentum of making music, touring and everyday life had all blurred together into something Memorial hadn’t fully reckoned with. They say:

"The song feels like it arrived gently but carried everything we had been ignoring. Only after finishing it did we understand its meaning. It became a reminder to trust your intuition, even when you feel uncertain."

Niamh Regan's voice was the only one they could hear on it. When the song took shape, the choice was instinctive, and right.

We're so proud to welcome @friendsofmemorial to the OPIA family, and even prouder to share what we've been making together.

Jack and Oliver have been making music together for over a decade, finding each other in a Brighton rehearsal room one Halloween and never really stopping. Some of you will already know them from @olafurarnalds & @thisistalos "We Didn't Know We Were Ready". That song is where our journey with them began, sparked by a week at @soundsfromasafeharbour . Before long they were in Ólafur's studio in Reykjavík, recording live, as heavy snowfall sealed them in from the outside world.

Today we share the first thing that came from that time.

'Teeth' is about the disorienting feeling of happiness that doesn't quite feel like home, holding joy and anxiety at exactly the same time. It is fragile, cinematic, and the most honest thing they've made. We're so glad it's finally out in the world. Listen now via the link in bio.

This is only the beginning! Follow Memorial to be the first to know what comes next. ✨ And if you're in the UK, catch them live supporting Roo Panes at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on 6 June, and at Alton Arts Festival on 4 July.
