Soft furnishings are often treated as the final layer of a room.

But curtains, blinds, cushions and upholstery influence light, warmth, acoustics and atmosphere.

Choosing them well can completely transform a room.

To help homeowners navigate these decisions, I’ve created a comprehensive guide to choosing soft furnishings in partnership with Closs & Hamblin.

The guide includes practical advice on fabrics, window treatments and layering pattern and texture.

If you’d like a copy, send me a DM or sign up to the Design Digest newsletter via the link in bio.

Getting involved in a project throws up all sorts of problems if you don’t engage an interior designer early enough.

Let’s take window treatments. Most of the problems I have to deal with when designing bespoke curtains and blinds could be avoided if ironed out at the planning stage.

Of course, that’s not always possible.

But here are some of the issues I’ve faced:

- Bedrooms with windows that don’t have room for curtains or blinds;
- Odd shaped windows;
- Odd shaped window cills;
- Not enough space either side to open the curtains without blocking light.

And the list goes on, particularly in period properties where proportions and architectural details don’t always lend themselves to standard solutions.

The solution isn’t going to be something you can buy from the shops. Bespoke solutions are going to be pricier but the come with quality, hand-stitching and behind the scenes design time to make sure you’ve got the right shape, lining, fabric, interlining, trim… etc.

If you’re buying new curtains and blinds, I’ve created a detailed guide in collaboration with Closs & Hamblin.

It covers the considerations most people don’t realise they need to think about, from function and privacy to proportion and finish.

You can access it, and a range of free resources, by signing up to my newsletter via the link in my bio.🔗

A considered solution always starts with understanding the problem properly. You can always drop me a line with questions.

Good morning! Something as easy as 1,2,3 for you today:

Three principles for choosing soft furnishings that work beautifully in a home.

1. Start with the mood of the room.

A bedroom should feel calm and restful. A living room may benefit from richer colour and deeper texture.

2. Layer pattern and texture.

A well-designed space rarely relies on a single fabric. Mixing pattern scale and material weight creates depth and interest.

3. Consider the architecture.

Large sash windows, beams and original features all influence how curtains, blinds and upholstery should be designed.

Soft furnishings are not simply decoration. They shape light, comfort, acoustics and atmosphere.

✨ To help you navigate these decisions, I’ve created a comprehensive soft furnishings guide in partnership with @clossandhamblin

One of the questions I get asked most is how to choose curtains and blinds.

Soft furnishings are often treated as the finishing touch.

But in reality, they shape how a room feels.

Curtains soften architecture.
Textiles add warmth.
Pattern and texture bring personality into a space.

Yet choosing fabrics can quickly become overwhelming.

Lining options, pattern scale, colour balance, practicality. There are far more decisions than you first expect.

So, I’ve teamed up with my friends at Closs & Hamblin to develop a partnership that makes life easier.

To mark this, we’ve created a new guide to help you make decisions with confidence.

The full guide is available exclusively to readers of the Design Digest newsletter.

We’ll be launching it at the end of the month so sign via the link in bio.
