A peek behind the LL curtain over at @landscapelovempls

This is 46.
I’m working out to @fitwithcoco in my basement most mornings, Steele sweating it out beside me. Still not eating daily breakfast, even though “they say” breakfast becomes even more crucial for perimenopause. I’ve got a Cruella De Vil streak of grey coming in, attempt to remember to apply Retinol nightly, and remind myself every wrinkle is still proof of the privilege to age!

I read a million novels this year — most in large print, which I discovered by accident at the library and now evangelize about unprompted. Same book, bigger font, faster read, don’t have to wear my readers. I also read at night with a headlamp set to the red light—it’s sexy over here.

I cooked countless recipes from @carochambers @hettymckinnon @recipe_tin @mollybaz @equittner @andreanguyen88 and other wizards in the kitchen.

We found ways to get away this year — Badlands, Bolinas, Troncones, Grindstone, Ojawashkwa, Miraval, Castle, Toronto — sometimes just family, sometimes friends, not always by plane, but always in search of the same thing: distance, a horizon, a version of myself that isn’t answering texts. I don’t take for granted that we get to do this. It’s a privilege, plain and simple. Getting away is genuinely how I find perspective — on the business, on the kids, on all of it.

Twenty one years in, Steele and I are still living our motto: alive and in it together. That’s not nothing. That might be everything.

Afton State Park kept doing what it always does. I’d go in with something heavy and come out able to carry it, not because the trail solved anything but because my body needed somewhere to put the feelings.

This was the year of caretaking, in every direction at once — friends and family, which came with a tour of every emergency room in the metro: Abbott, Southdale, HCMC, Regions. Regions won for the record. Loving on my sister through a chapter that had no right being that hard and holding the hand of a sister of another kind on a rocky trail of her life.

💕A Short LL story about what’s not on the estimate 💕

Our clients had just finished building their home — finally — and now it was time for the landscaping. For the neighbor next door, our arrival meant one thing: it wasn’t over yet.
She’d been through it for the house build. Tight lot, rough asshole contractors, months of noise and mess and disruption that had nothing to do with her and no end in sight. She wasn’t mad at us. She was just tired of ongoing disruptive construction.

We saw that. And we wanted to do something about it.

So before we broke ground, we sat down with her. Brought her into the property line conversation like she belonged there — because she did. We walked her yard and moved her plants out of harm’s way before the work began. We told her what was going to happen and then we made sure it did. The crew checked in with her, answered her questions, treated her like a neighbor and not an obstacle. Every single day. And when we realized her garbage cans had nowhere good to go in the new layout, we built her a little patio. Just for her. Just because. For free.

She waved us off on the last day with this big smile. That right there — that’s the whole thing. Someone who started exhausted and guarded left feeling taken care of. A little healing from a little Landscape Love.

Every project has a bottom line. This one just had a little extra that didn’t make it onto the page — a transplanted perennial here, a garbage can patio there, a crew that showed up kind every single day. No line item for any of it... What’s not on the estimate is the love, Landscape Love style. 💕✌🏽🌞

******DISCLAIMER: Not to be confused with a service where we mediate neighbor disputes. This neighbor was genuinely kind and reasonable from the start — just worn out and understandably frustrated . We didn’t fix a difficult person. We just got to be her good experience after a string of bad ones.

Red mulch is cringe. Not all opinions are controversial.

This spring, our crew is back. All of them. Plus a couple new faces into the fold. Most of this team has been with us 7+ years — and in a trade where that’s practically unheard of, we don’t take it for granted for a single second.

That kind of loyalty doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from paying people fairly, treating them like the skilled professionals they are, and actually giving a damn about their lives outside of work.

This is who will bring the love to your yard this year.

We’re proud of the spaces we create. We’re prouder of the team that creates them.

Sun’s out. It’s been dark — in every sense.

Hard to just… proceed as normal when it feels anything but. And yet — we’ve got a crew that shows up every day, and landscapes to build, and that work means something too.

Come find us when you’re ready.

And in the meantime — keep taking care of your neighbors. They still need groceries, rent, kindness, and you 💕
