Après être parti vivre à Montréal pour faire ce qu’il aime vraiment – dessiner au crayon graphite des objets du quotidien –, Clovis Rétif est revenu en France pour diversifier son approche. Il y introduit d’abord la couleur et la sensorialité du pastel, de l’encre et de la peinture. Puis il applique son trait à une variété de supports, des vêtements anciens sur lesquels il dessine, ou l’argile. Peuplé de symboles, des typographies chinoise et japonaise, d’images américaines vintage et d’objets trouvés, son langage se nourrit d’une constellation de références intimes, qu’il décline sous la forme de pièces uniques : lampes en papier japonais et aquarelle, peignes et cuillères en céramique... Le trentenaire, qui collabore avec de nombreuses marques a également signé l’identité visuelle et participé à la décoration de plusieurs futurs hôtels. En décembre, comme une étape dans son parcours, il sortira son premier livre, déclinaison éditoriale de son univers prolifique.

The Art of Between for MERDE X: Double featuring @noirdemode & @clovisretif_

Two people, one shared practice. Clovis is an artist and object designer working across drawing, wood, ceramics and found pieces, drawn to objects that become relics over time. His first book arrives this December. Margot is a designer and art director who works under her own name and also runs Noirdemode, the looser, more instinctive project she started almost by accident at 18.

They live, work and create side by side, often joining forces on branding projects. For our DOUBLE issue, they talk about life in two places at once: city and countryside, inside and outside, given name and alias, and above all, being a couple.

MERDE has been my outlet for 7 years now, and honestly, I’m not scared to poke the status quo or ruffle some feathers in an industry that’s a little (okay, very) flawed. We’ve always wanted to blow it up from the inside, even while playing the game ourselves. Getting to work on stories from all over the world for issue 10 was an absolute joy, and I cannot wait for you all to finally see it on September 8.
