POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

@cltarchitecture students have just returned from their fall break trip to Medellín, Colombia! 🇨🇴

Led by Associate Professor Ming-Chun Lee, this program is the second installment of our School of Architecture study abroad series exploring issues shared across major South American cities.

Earlier this semester, 9 students began a joint studio project with peers at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) through virtual sessions. In Medellín, they spent a week exploring the city before gathering with UPB faculty and students for a one-day workshop to share their site findings and first design ideas for an airport redevelopment project.

Along the way, students observed, mapped and compared the layered public spaces of a city of 2.62 million people:

🚡 Rode the Metro and Metrocable up to Santo Domingo to see social urbanism and hillside mobility in action
💧 Visited EPM to learn how utility facilities and water tanks become community spaces
🏛️ Met with EDU to hear how participatory planning shapes Integrated Urban Projects
🚋 Rode the Ayacucho Tram to study streetscape redesign and pedestrian corridors
🚂 Toured PAO (Plaza de Artes y Oficios), a restored railway depot in Bello that’s now a hub for artisans
🚇 Went behind the scenes at Metro de Medellín
🌿 Heard from LAND design studio, then walked Medellín River Park

Students now head back to the studio to finish developing their design concepts. What a great trip!

Thailand study abroad trip was amazing! 🇹🇭 From Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and then Phuket, I enjoyed every second of it! Lots of eye opening experiences and adventures. Can’t wait for what comes next 😇

Four practitioners. Four answers that don’t reconcile.

UNC Charlotte students spent 23 days in Thailand — Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket — studying sustainable tourism and business ethics where the questions actually live.

They didn’t come home with a position. They came home able to hold one.

Where should we take students next? 👇
