Artist Note: I’ve received an absurd amount of comments concerned that transfer methods promote “copying” or “cheating” in art. While this is far from true, let me reiterate: ALL artists should learn to draw. A transfer will never compensate for poor drawing skills, no matter how detailed it is.

This technique is not new. The oil transfer (and other similar transfer methods) have been utilized for centuries by some of the greatest masters in history.

Many of these ancient transfer techniques would damage or destroy an artist’s original drawing in the process (pouncing, for example).

This method (printing a copy of your drawing first) saves time when scaling to a larger canvas size — without the need to destroy your original drawing.

I am so grateful for modern technologies that allow for more time creating art — just as the old masters utilized with gratitude the helpful technologies of their day.

This transfer method can come in handy with all kinds of crafting and creative projects.

- The same result can be achieved using charcoal instead of oil paint — make sure to blow off any extra charcoal dust after covering the back of your image. I recommend a soft charcoal, like “vine.”

- You can transfer onto paper, canvas, wood, and I’m sure many other surfaces.

- This does not work well with Acrylic paint as a transfer medium — acrylic dries too fast, and your lines won’t be deposited onto your board / canvas.

- If painting on a stretched canvas instead of boa

@clvarney_art It’s not just for painters — this transfer method can come in handy with all kinds of crafting and creative projects.

- The exact same process can be achieved using CHARCOAL instead of oil paint — just make sure to blow off the extra charcoal dust after covering the back of your printed image. I recommend a very soft charcoal, like “vine.”

- You can transfer onto paper, canvas, wood, and I’m sure many other surfaces I haven’t tried yet!

- You can also use charcoal when transferring on canvas/board for a painting, I just prefer oil because the transfer lines blend nicely with the first few layers of paint.

- NOTE: This does not work with Acrylic paint as a transfer medium — acrylic dries too fast, and your lines won’t be deposited onto your board / canvas.

- If you’re painting on a stretched canvas instead of board, make sure to place some books or something behind it so you don’t punch through the canvas fabric when tracing your lines.

Hope this was helpful. I’m not an influencer or pro video-maker, just an artist hoping to save you some time and effort with things I’ve learned.

If I missed anything else in my explanation, leave me a comment and I’ll answer it as soon as I can!
