Contemporary Masterclass for Intermediate on March 12, 6:00-7:30pm at CCD with Teacher Glycel!

Glycel Therese P. Abatol began her dance training in Cebu, Philippines, as a ballet scholar, where one of her first instructors was CCD’s Johanna Mangubat.

She later earned a scholarship to the Philippine High School for the Arts where candidates from all around the country would compete in auditions for the limited slots. Here, as a dance major, she built a strong foundation in ballet, contemporary, and the various performance arts under mentors from most major ballet companies of the country including Lisa Macuja, Nonoy Froilan, Anatoli Panasyukov, and Robert Medina.

For higher education, she proceeded to the University of the Philippines College of Music where she was accepted to pursue a Major in Dance.

In the intervening years of her higher education, an opportunity came unexpectedly for an audition with the prestigious international performing arts university, the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. There she was accepted for a full scholarship among candidates from all over the world to pursue a Trinity Level 6 Diploma in Professional Dance. At the academy, she was able to broaden her versatility in dance and refine her technique in ballet, contemporary, jazz, and commercial dance. Glycel is the 2nd Filipino ever to commence among the international pool of graduates.

Glycel currently teaches ballet at Rubu Qarn Music and works as a professional dancer involved in various performances across the city such as projects with the Sima Dance Company of the UAE.

Alongside her formal dance training, she has explored various styles ranging from the popular such as Hip-hop and the more cultural styles such as the Jamaican Dancehall. Throughout her journey with dance, she remains committed to expanding her range by continuously immersing herself in new movement languages.

Glycel values honesty in movement and meaningful connection in every space she enters. She approaches dance with humility, curiosity, and a deep gratitude for the teachers and communities that shaped her — carrying that same spirit into every class, rehearsal, and performance.

“Ang Pagbangon”

With the recent Typhoon Tino and the upcoming Typhoon Ulan, I wanted to share this art piece that I created after Typhoon Odette back in 2022.

Kabalo ko, lisod ni hunahunaon, pero mobangon ta. Padayon ta nga mosalig, moampo, ug mobarog pag-usab.

Psalms 46:1–3
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

This painting is also exhibited at the STORYA DOS Exhibition in Kyureto Art Space, SM J Centre Mall, until November 30. 🖼️🤍
