Just call us Thelma & Louise - minus all the bad stuff.
We rented a car at the end of our walk and we drove (well, I drove and Camille navigated) along the northern coast of Spain to Bilbao in the Basque region surrounded by snow capped mountains and crashing seas. And did you know the road signs are in a completely different language (of which, I have no knowledge) in the Basque Country? It would have been a helpful tip, trust me.
I’m not sure that little car’s clutch will ever be the same, but I’m proud to say that we didn’t stall out on any of the many hill’s of the city streets though a driving law or two may or may not have been broken.

Adiós rocks!
Camino tradition calls for carrying a rock in your pack as a symbol of a burden you carry in life. One aspect of the Camino is about wrestling with that burden and then taking the opportunity to release it at some point. There are multiple places where pilgrims leave their rocks along the way and we saw stacks of rocks as we walked. We chose to take our rocks to the seashore (we didn’t walk there - we had the help of a rental car!). It was good to let them go and watch them sink and wonder if they would be transformed into something new.

We made it.

Thanks for all your prayers and good wishes along the way!
First stop, picking up our Compostela Certificate at the pilgrim office.
That last shell marker, the Cathedral, and that bed were all welcomed sites!
The saying goes that getting to the Cathedral is just the beginning of one’s pilgrim journey and that one’s life should better reflect the goodness of all that was learned and experienced along the way. It’s a tall order, yet one that I pray I will be able to meet in one way or another.

Onward! We spied the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on the Monte do Gozo (Mount of Joy) as countless pilgrims before us had (including Saint Francis of Assisi in the early 13th century). There literally were some sort of fireworks around the cathedral the moment we saw her (swipe to see video)! With about an hour still to go, we were almost to the end of this stage of the journey.

We have been amazed by so many incredibly creative, hard working, and welcoming small business owners along the way. Seems like everywhere we turned, there was someone working to make the Camino better in all sorts of ways. What a pleasure to benefit from their gifts and talents!

This is the sound of trees clapping their hands.
When we have been tired or hungry or wondering what the heck we are doing walking this much, the trees and the birds seem to cheer us on the most.
…
“For you shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12

So, this Presbyterian walks into a pizza joint…it was the start of a great joke when we suddenly realized it was bagpipe at the pizzeria night, (not the official title, but it is how we now refer to it 😉). It was the penultimate moment of a very good day. We had no idea that the people entering in the pizzeria and heading to a back room were part of a bagpipe band - until they began playing, of course. I asked if I could go in and video them and they were so proud to allow me the opportunity. It was fabulous. Watch the video to the end and you will see what I mean. It really was an honor to be able to share in an unexpected moment of commonality.
They were worried about my ears, but I assured them I had experience with bagpipes, so never fear.

Which way do we go? Just follow the signs. Yellow arrows mark the way. Sometimes it’s a tile on a wall. Sometimes it’s an official concrete marker showing kilometers remaining. Sometimes it’s painted on the ground or a fence or a rock, fading and worn. However it appears, it is a welcomed sight to point us in the right direction and keep us from making a wrong turn or having to retrace our steps. When we get back home, it would be a luxury to have such signs pointing us in the right direction when we don’t know where we are going, but we know we are getting closer.

Today. What to say about today…ask any of the pilgrims who walked the way with us today and they will tell you. It was hard. Almost 20 miles and 8 hours in the cold rain, up and down steep hills, on rocky paths, with not as much scenery or people greeting us as the previous days. Several times the route divided and we had to make a decision based on basically no other knowledge except that one meant heading right and the other left. The longest day in distance and in time for us. So, we just kept putting one foot in front of the other, and did our best to avoid the muck and the major puddles. And yes, my shoes stayed pretty clean, so we must have done something right.

We took this as a sign on our first day.
Upon stopping in a little shelter that was simply a place to retreat from the sun or the rain or just to rest, we found a book with prayer requests listed and as I heard Camille say, “I’ll pray for her grandfather,” I happened to snap this photo. I’ve never had a light reflection like this on my phone before.
Along the way, there are many places (chapels, shelters, cafes, random places) where prayer is requested or prayers are offered. That weird light could be complete coincidence or maybe it is a Spirit-incidence. Either way, for good measure we are trying to pay attention to both the need and the offering and let God take care of the rest.
