Stoked to been able to sit in as Creative Director for this issue of @freeskiermagazine while G was fishing in Alaska • • •

And this one goes out to the team behind the pages, as it would have been entirely impossible without fellow Art Boi @goateye.design for his technical expertise, patient guidance, and easy collaborative approach • • • @taggart.sam for opening his mind of ideas, leaving plenty of space to bring mine to the table, and for always leading with love and humor amidst the realities of print deadlines • • • @dcquigley for his experiential knowledge, fun loving soul, and for driving a million miles around the west with hundreds of pounds of ski gear, a smile on his face all the while • • • to @ melanie for her kindness, and attentive knowhow - I dare say the magazine wouldn’t run without the glue you provide • • • @pwelsh28 for crushing on the business end, and for without fail having a complimentary word and warm greeting on the phone or in person • • • and to @ Andrew for letting us put silver on the cover, and for your remarkably candid artistic opinions • • •

To all those involved in making this issue come to life • • •

A thousand thank yous 🙏 • • •

Just a spoon • • • 🥄 🦎 • • • 12” x 3”ish • • • Acrylic on an old wooden spoon • • •

Made this for an AMC — Appalachian Mountain Club — Hut croo a few years back while staying in Greenleaf hut in the White Mountains • • • I was visiting a friend working there for the season and they used it as their “croo relic” to immortalize their time there for eternity • • •

When I do make art, I love using alternative canvases — surfboards, skis, fins, etc • • • maybe more spoons are in my future 🤔 • • •

“Panthera” • iPad Pro + @adobe illustrator • commissioned by @middleburycollege • • •

I’m enjoying leaning into surrealism a bit, and love the lil cow on the tail/globe (we ended up moving it because they wanted the cows on the pasture ONLY, but I still love it up there) • • •

Comment “i love the cow” so I know I’m right • • •

This will go on a card, sticker, and @miir cup to be sent to prospective Middlebury students • • •

“Sashimi” [sold] • 2019 • 6’4” x 21.5” x 3” • Acrylic on Northern White Cedar • Created in collaboration with @grainsurfboards • •
•
•
This fish-on-a-fish is a snapshot of overfishing post WWII, and an ode to the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna - who is making a tremendous comeback along the eastern seaboard, where Grain finds its home (York, Maine)
•
• •
A few notes on Sashimi:
•
1)
The Tuna represented is the size of an average blue fin - the full size tuna would be the size of the board
•
2)
The number of scales drawn is approximately the amount paid for the most expensive Blue Fin to date (sold in Japan for $247,000 USD). Tbh, I’m pretty sure I lost count, but I tried
•
3)
There are Japanese characters throughout the piece denoting: “sashimi”, “Tuna”, and “otoro” - the fatty belly meat for which Atlantic bluefin was often harvested
•
4)
There are a few other, more personal Easter eggs, but those are to be discovered with time. If you find all 4, I’d be insanely impressed
•
5)
Like Tuna, whose migratory patterns take them from the Med to New Finland and beyond, this board can thrive in both tropical and frigid waters — the same can be said of East Coast Surfers 🤙 ❄️
•
6)
The piece was drawn in a yurt in Vermont (it was both an excellent and terrible idea)
•
7)
It took approximately 50 hours to complete (about 25 of those were by headlamp). That’s not including the 50+ hours to shape it by the Grain lads
•
8)
After admiring their surf craft from afar, I was thrilled - and honored - to set foot in the shop, get hold of a board, and work with the absolute homies at Grain- my fellow east coast natives. We decided on a fish (a shape of surfboard @mom), and on it? Why not...a fish! (🐠)

If you don’t know already, I try to implement as much backstory into each of my drawings as possible. Aesthetic is one thing; meaningful aesthetic is another
•
•
•
It’s far easier to convey this meaning in person than on Instagram, but I’ve decided I’ll try, as it is in this research and planning where much of the work goes. So, there ya have it
•
•
•
If you’ve read this far, I owe you a beer 🍻

A note from design land • • •

When Breezy and I made her bib this season, we added the Olympic rings • • •

She’s an Olympian after all, and had her sights set on the upcoming games in Italy • • • Sadly, because of trademark law ( or whatever ) we had to take them out, and we printed the bib sans rings • • •

In honor of her achieving her Olympic dream in Italy, I added them back in • • • where they should be • • •

A bit about the art:

We began from a design we made in advance of the 2022 Olympics, which most prominently shows a fearless young girl, looking out over the Tetons to dreams as yet achieved • • •

Inspired by the statue by @kristenvisbal in NYC, and another similar statue in Park City (both pictured) — I’d been wanting to incorporate fearless girl imagery into my work in honor of the strong women who raised me and those I live alongside that inspire me daily • • •

In concert with Breezy’s road since we met, from injury and her resulting choice to not compete in Beijing at the Olympics in 2022, to overcoming adversity on and off the hill to return to win gold at the games in Italy, the art stands strong as a testament to her irrepressible drive, admirable work ethic, and indeed fearlessness • • •

The bib features snow leopard motifs in honor of a helmet Breezy designed for @lindseyvonn when she was a kid, and includes shoutouts to her Teton roots with the original 1939 truck powered rope tow @snowkingmountain and Big Red, the iconic tram @jacksonhole • • •

Finally, it incorporates mantras from the US women’s downhill team: #likethewind and #lfg • • •

It’s a project that has sustained meaning • • • made all the more sweet with gold medal dreams achieved in her third Olympics • • •

Fearless girl indeed • • •

“Nuisance Bear” | @adobe Illustrator + iPad Pro • • •

Commission for @_taylorsweitzer , pal and polar guide, whose relationship with polar bears has been intimate • • •

Taylor asked for a design to put on a card to give to his clients in the field. I was glad when he picked this direction, as I had just seen @nuisance_bear_film which so — beautifully captures the plight of these remarkable animals, from climate change and melting ice, to the polarizing dynamics with humans they face from Manitoba to the North Pole and beyond • • • if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth the time • • •

We chose a thick card stock with rounded corners to withstand bouncing around in a pack on month long expeditions and left a little room to write notes on it if need be • • •

Also showing some of the initial concepts • • •
