Here’s a second batch of ungraded stills, some of my favourite cinematic moments I was able to achieve in ‘The Perfect Family’ as DOP 🤩🎥
Stills I wanted to highlight:
• The towering shadow of the chair on Margot’s back represents the guilt and contradiction her character had to carry emotionally all throughout the short film, which at her age she couldn’t fully comprehend. When it was accidentally revealed, causing an explosive argument between her parents, she blamed herself even though she was never supposed to be put in such position. The shadow of the chair also represents her fate looming over her, as the argument plays out it concludes with her being left alone with her younger brother on her hands, putting her in a position where she is forced to mature much faster than her age to take care and be responsible of herself and her brother due to the physically and emotionally absence of their parents. This film explores themes of child neglect during marital issues and the impact of that on child development.
• The singular eye being lit between the chair slats reminds us as the audience of her innocence. She’s just a kid, not fully understanding this situation, her way of getting context is by sneakily watching and earwigging what unfolds by hiding behind the chair to not get caught, this also gives her a sense of protection and guarding during an overwhelming and uncertain time.
• The medium wide of Margot sitting alone at the table looking down is so symbolic and impactful for this film. We as audience can feel the vast emptiness of the room that reflects Margot’s feeling of isolation as the cracks start to grow in her family. As DOP I specifically used a low level camera position for this shot to create the illusion of all of Margot’s surroundings to appear much larger than herself to reflect her overwhelm, feeling much smaller and lost in a place that she used to call home.
• The soft, warm lighting in the living room portrayed ‘The Perfect Family’, an illusion of safety and love where as the cold, green lighting in the kitchen reflected the truth, with the window being the pivotal moment in the story that revealed the brutal truth of the family.

Here are some ungraded stills from my recent project 'The Perfect Family' that I DOPed. Extremely happy with the lighting and composition I was able to achieve! Big thank you to the whole team, crew and cast from all departments and units, you were all so hard working and talented! Looking forward to seeing the final graded film 🥰👏🎥

A massive thank you to all the tutors at @creativemediaskills :

@jackieteboul for teaching us not only how to light with intention using industry standard lights from @pinewoodmbslighting but the science behind it! Your lessons helped me improve my confidence with lighting, which highly attributed to my cinematography during the FMP and will certainly be carried all throughout my career! 🥰
@terrybamber1 and Vivien Calleja for teaching us how to 1st AD like a star with script breakdowns, schedules, risk assessments, communication, set ettiquette, I could go on... 😉
@daly2365 for teaching us how to build RED cameras, operate them, focus pull, different filters and so much more. I'm proud to say that your teachings have already been applied to my work on set! 😊🎥
@richardelson, @andydelaney and Sacha for teaching us the art and strategy behind directing professional actors, how to construct and deconstruct stories to create meaning and connection to audience as well as the science behind it.
Special thank you to @richardelson for believing in me and giving me the role of DOP for this FMP, I hope I made you proud! 😊
Carl Scoenfeld for teaching us the theory of film and the receipe of what makes a good film.
And to so many more incredibly talented individuals such as the DIT, Sound, Storyboard and Location Manager guys!!! Thank you all for your time, passion and commitment to teaching the next generation of filmmakers 👏🥰🎉

It has been an incredible year learning from the best in the industry and being in the space where big movie magic happens!
