Some moments as an educator just fill your heart... ❤️

SO incredibly proud of @cmudrama senior @trey_buuu , who was absolutely FANTASTIC last night as the featured vocalist in a concert celebrating the incomparable @lin_manuel alongside the extraordinary @mandy.gonzalez, @maestromayes, and the @pghsymphony!

I still remember the day I met Trey and his wonderful mother, @tamarawrenbuie, at his audition in New York. I remember being so struck by his talent, his spirit, and the incredible potential of this young artist. Even then, I knew that moments like this were in his not-so-distant future.

Tonight was such beautiful confirmation of that.

What a JOY to watch Trey continue to grow into the artist I always knew he could be, sharing his extraordinary gifts on a stage like Heinz Hall alongside a Broadway star and world-class musicians. SO, SO PROUD of you, Trey!!! And I cannot wait to see where your journey takes you next. ❤️🎶

In the press: the 2026 nominations.

When the Tony nominations came out on May 5, 2026, Carnegie Mellon counted a record 15 nominations for 10 alumni, its 17th straight year with a nominee. Two of those nominations were ours, both for Best Musical: The Lost Boys @lostboysmusical and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) @twostrangersmusical.

Awards season 2026.

Our shows took 21 Tony nominations and 4 Tony Awards, with two Best Musical nominees: The Lost Boys @lostboysmusical (12 nominations, 4 wins: Ali Louis Bourzgui, Shoshana Bean, scenic design and lighting design) and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) @twostrangersmusical (8 nominations, among them Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts). Brandon J. Dirden was nominated for Waiting for Godot @godotbway. Three weeks earlier at the Drama Desk Awards: 3 wins. And in February, a Grammy for the Buena Vista Social Club cast recording @buenavistamusical, with Just in Time @justintimebway nominated beside it.

Shout out to second-year MFA Directing candidate J. Cody Spellman and his G2 production of Fool for Love by Sam Shepard!

Set in a motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Fool for Love follows Eddie and May through a volatile collision of love, obsession, and the complicated histories that bind them together. A raw exploration of love, hate, and the fading myths of the American West.

The production runs October 7-9 in the Helen Wayne Rauh Studio Theater at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama.

There are some days as a teacher that are just so gratifying and truly joyful. Tuesday was one of those days.

Watching @cmudrama alumna and my dear friend @khailahjohnson onstage at Heinz Hall as the featured vocalist alongside @jeffgoldblum, his band, and the @pghsymphony was honestly emotional.

I felt like I was watching the superstar I always knew was there… one that just kept growing brighter and brighter until suddenly, there she was, standing in front of 2,000 people, holding the entire room in the palm of her hand with every ballad and keeping us on the edge of our seats with every uptempo.

It was, quite frankly, beautiful and thrilling.

What made the evening even more special was being able to bring some of our current students to the concert and introduce them to Khailah. There was something incredibly moving about watching one generation of our artists celebrate and connect with another… and seeing our students get a glimpse of the extraordinary possibilities that lie ahead of them. THAT was pretty special.

I love what we do as artists, storytellers, and theatre makers. I love teaching. I am so grateful for the extraordinary lineage of teachers who came before me, the colleagues and students who inspire me every day, and the generations who will come after us. Our faculty and students work SO hard. They sacrifice, they take risks, they give so much of themselves to their craft, often without knowing exactly where all of that work will lead (or when… for that matter).

And then there are nights like Tuesday.

I got to watch all of that work pay off. And I can’t remember the last time I felt quite so fulfilled by what we do as a community of artists and educators.

Keep teaching. Keep studying. Keep making and creating.
