Did you know that Certified Naturally Grown is the only certification with standards specifically designed for natural mushroom production? Under the USDA National Organic Program, mushrooms are categorized as crops and are held to the same standards as vegetables. In 2016, with guidance from an advisory council of mushroom-growing experts, CNG developed a set of standards specifically for mushroom production. These standards address the unique considerations of growing fungi, including substrate materials, pest and disease management, water, substrate disposal, sterilization and pasteurization, and containers.

This meetup will be hosted by mushroom farmer, author, and member of CNG’s Mushroom Advisory Council, Steve Gabriel. We’ll use this time to answer your questions about growing fungi and revisit the thinking behind CNG’s mushroom-specific standards. This is an open forum, so bring your questions, ideas, and experiences. Whether you’re already growing mushrooms or exploring the possibility, plan to leave with new resources, practical ideas, and a better understanding of what goes into growing mushrooms naturally.

🎉 We’re now Certified USDA Transitional Organic 🌱
(Yes, we’re also proudly Certified Naturally Grown)

What does this mean?

📖Under USDA standards, we’ve demonstrated that we’ve been managing our fields without prohibited synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or GMOs for one season.

We will officially become “Certified Organic” by October of 2028 so long as we keep up the good work!

💙Follow along and keep an eye out for future posts about how, why, and how we’re addressing the limitations of organic by keeping up with our Certified Naturally Grown Certification as well!

Turmeric is a long season crop. We start it in late February, plant it out in May and finally start harvest in late September. It's a slow grower and removes a bed from rotation for the whole season but it works well in our system where (just like our ginger) it produces a good amount of product on a small 1/2 bed that really isn't used for much else.

Turmeric is a low maintenance crop once planted. We treat it much like our ginger where we will and fertilze once a month.

Turmeric, unlike ginger, is self sustaining for us. We are able to regrow next season's crop from our saved mother rizomes (most of the time our seed ginger pieces rot away or are absorbed by our growing ginger plants).
