Football is truly a game of inches. Sometimes the play doesn’t go your way. Just barely tipped - enough to throw off the trajectory of the ball - incomplete pass. But I promise you, I love every single second of the battle. Grateful for the game of football and blessed beyond measure to play this game alongside my brothers at Saint Andrews School.

And it came to pass in the days of autumn, when the fields had gone golden and the harvest was near, that a Shepherd led his flock along the edge of his pastures.

At the far end of his land, where the grass gave way to a field of marked white lines, he beheld a young man throwing a leather ball into the empty air. And the Shepherd drew near, for he had not seen such a thing before.

“Young man,” said the Shepherd, “what is this labor that you do, alone, when the sun grows low?”

And the Quarterback answered, “I am training, old father. I throw the ball a thousand times, that my arm may not fail me. I move my feet upon the earth, that I may escape those who would strike me down.”

The Shepherd leaned upon his staff and considered this. “You throw at nothing. You run from no one. And no yet you sweat as though the enemy were upon you.”

“The enemy is always upon me,” said the quarterback. “On the day of battle, eleven men will come for me. They are giants, father. They are swift, and they are angry. If I stand alone, I will surely fall.”

“Then you are a fool to stand at all,” said the Shepherd.

But the quarterback smiled. “I do not stand alone. That is the secret you do not see.”

And the Shepherd said, “Explain this to me, for I am only a keeper of sheep.”

The quarterback set down his ball and pointed to five marks upon the field, where the grass was worn away by the weight of great men.

“Here stand five who guard me,” he said. “They are broad as barn doors and strong as oxen. When the giants come, these five rise up as a wall. They ask for no glory. They score no points. The crowd does not chant their names.”

“And what do they receive?” asked the Shepherd.

“Bruises,” said the quarterback. “Broken bones. Soft tissue injuries. They give their bodies so that mine may be spared. When I throw the rock and the people cheer for me — it is our wall that made the moment possible. Every run and every throw was brought about by their dedication, their discipline, their pain and sacrifice.”

The Shepherd was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, “In my flock, there is a ram who stands at the edge of the field when the wolves come in the night. He does not eat the s
