10 years ago this week: My second ever HEMA tournament, and second time at Iron Gate Exhibition at Danvers Indoor Sports in Massachusetts, which I attended with my teammates from the Long Island Historical Fencing Society.
The first day started in brutal fashion with dagger. After watching our club’s Ryan Zukowski take on my buddy Harold Vance in the light dagger class, I competed in heavy dagger against three formidable fellows, all much bigger than me: Steven Hirsch, Patrick McCaffrey (who also interviewed me for his HEMA podcast) and my clubmate Ian Craig. IGX used these really painful metal-cored dagger simulators that year, and the alternating offense/defense ruleset led to lots of punishing stabby stabs. During my first match, a tie against Steven, I ended up with what I later found out was a bruised rib. Then came an excellent and very tough match against Patrick in which I gave it my all but did not prevail despite what he kindly called my “great roversos.” I was totally gassed after that but had to fight a back-to-back bout against Ian, who proceeded to toss me around like a wet kitten.
After icing down my bruised rib and a jammed thumb, it was time to break out my arming sword and buckler for the mixed weapons and S&B pools, which I enjoyed immensely and did pretty well at, just missing the elims. My fave match was against Harold and his whirling langes messer. I had fought him once before at the prior year’s IGX, when he was my very first opponent in the basic longsword tournament. He won that bout skillfully, I evened the score with a victory here. I think we were both smiling under our masks during each pass even when my hit to his codpiece set off sparks. Other fun matches for me were with opponents Cédric Hauteville and Audun Theodorsen.

10 years ago this week: I attended my very first HEMA tournament, IGX 2015 at Danvers Indoor Sports in Danvers, MA.
Day 1: After driving up from the ferry by myself the night before, I met up with my teammates Matt Erickson, Brad “The Wise” Rangell, Brad Beck and former club member Nick Murro. I then made the rookie mistake of taking several very active classes before competing, starting with a fantastic wrestling workshop with Ingulf Kohlweiss. Also took a longsword class with Axel Pettersen (much to my later chagrin, though at the time I had no idea whatsoever of his ugly identitarian politics). By the time the basic longsword event came up, I had tired myself out and did not do particularly well, but I met (and fought) some future friends and fellow then-newbies such as Patrick McCaffrey, Seth Robinson and Harold Vance. That night we all had dinner at Carrabba’s in Peabody, and Brad the Wise and I polished off a nice bottle of Layer Cake Malbec.
Day 2: I was done competing, so I squired for Matt as he fought in the advanced longsword event, marveled at Ties Kool’s awesomely colorful kit (less common than now), bought my first pair of “swordsman’s gloves” and a rubber spear tip from the Purpleheart booth, and watched Brad the Wise and Nick clash in the pools. Brad Beck was on fire and made the finals, where he had a particularly memorable match against Eddy Louis and took bronze. I also remember being impressed by another finals match, John Morahn vs. Arto Fama.
Day 3: Before heading home, I attended John O’Connor and Don Kindsvatter’s excellent “Meyer Dagger Fundamentals” class, which kinda spurred my later obsession with rondel dagger.

10 years ago today: I began my journey into Historical European Martial Arts with my very first class at the Long Island Historical Fencing Society, at the ripe age of 49. A few weeks earlier, I had been surfing YouTube and came across Matt Easton's channel, and was fascinated by the idea of HEMA and studying longsword. I'd always loved swords and armor since I was a small child, when my parents took me many times to the Met Museum in NYC where I would marvel at the Hall of Arms and Armor (I still have the four Aurora knight model kits I bought there circa 1970: the Silver Knight of Augsburg, Blue Knight of Milan, Black Knight of Nurnberg and Red Knight of Vienna), and continuing through my obsessions with ASOIAF, LOTR etc. But my high school didn't offer fencing, and I never thought playing with swords was ever an option in my life. This, however, seemed within reach. I quickly found the iconic "Medieval Weapon Finds Modern Appeal" New York Times article on HEMA, and from there, decided to Google whether there were any HEMA clubs within driving distance. That's how I found the LIHFS, whose visionary co-founder Brad "The Wise" Rangell promptly invited me down to a practice at the church space in Wantagh they shared with the local SCA. I vividly remember that first night, being handed a loaner longsword, helmet and gloves and being thrown into zornhau drills against Ian Weitz. I recall the pleasant shock at realizing that being hit in the head with a steel sword didn't actually hurt. The club was small back then, less than 10 people. Several of the faces I met that night would become not only my instructors and mentors, but dear friends (callin' out Matt Erickson and Ryan Zukowski). A few days later, the guys invited me to a second weekend practice, outdoors at Dix Hills Park (the source of this photo). I loved it, and continued to train, and now I've been at it a whole decade.
