POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

THEY COUNTED THE PICKS. WE COUNTED THE YEARS.

Norfolk State was founded in 1935—making us the youngest university anywhere in this historic ranking.

Every school surrounding NSU had a head start:

Alabama State — 68 years
Alcorn State — 64 years
Jackson State — 58 years
Southern — 55 years
Kentucky State — 49 years
NC A&T — 44 years
Winston-Salem State — 43 years
Grambling State — 34 years
Tennessee State — 23 years

And yet Norfolk State still stands tied for fourth all-time among HBCUs with 14 NBA Draft selections.

A little historical context: NBA drafts once lasted far more than two rounds, and players could be selected again in a later year. Norfolk State legend Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland was drafted by Chicago in both 1968 and 1969. So this ranking represents 14 selections—not 14 different players.

THE 14 NORFOLK STATE SELECTIONS:

1968 — Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland
1969 — Charles Bonaparte
1969 — Bob Dandridge (2021 basketball hall of fame inductee)
1969 — Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland
1970 — Jon McKinney
1971 — Rudolph Peele
1971 — Morrell James
1976 — Gene Cunningham
1977 — Ray Epps
1980 — Kenny Evans
1984 — David Pope
1987 — Ralph Tally
1988 — Lee Johnson
2012 — Kyle O’Quinn

From Hall of Famer Bob Dandridge to Kyle O’Quinn—the most recent HBCU player selected in the NBA Draft—Norfolk State didn’t need the longest history to build one of the greatest basketball legacies in HBCU history.

They had decades of a head start.
We still caught them.

BEHOLD. NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY.

The “BOSS.”

For 44 years, Coach has been a trailblazer, innovator, pioneer, and the standard for grassroots basketball. His impact reaches far beyond wins and championships he’s helped shape the game and inspire millions of young girls and boys to chase their dreams.

One of the best parts of every EYBL season is watching former players, alumni, coaches, and basketball greats stop to give Coach his flowers. The respect he commands throughout the basketball world isn’t given it’s earned.

A true legend. A living legacy. The BOSS. 👑🏀

The 2026 travel ball season has come to an end, and I couldn’t be more proud of our program and the growth we made this spring and summer.

I never take for granted the opportunity to pour into young men and appreciate every family that trusted us to help lead their sons.

From Atlanta ➡️ Memphis ➡️ Las Vegas ➡️ North Augusta, it was a season full of memories. Funny how you’re ready for it to end when you’re in the middle of it, but the moment it’s over, you already miss it.

Until next time… 🏀
