Why Youth Football Is Messed Up…

Derrick Tatum and Coach Clark break it down:

Derrick:

“All this fighting and drama at youth games? It didn’t come from the kids—it came from the new school parent. Y’all ran off the real coaches with all the complaining about playing time. Now? You're stuck with social media coaches who care more about likes than fundamentals.”

Coach Clark:

“I remember a parent coming at me because their son wasn’t getting on the field. The kid was a WR with no chance of playing based on talent alone. The parent said, ‘You’re supposed to develop him!’ Nah… development starts at home and in the off-season. I coach what's ready to play under the lights. I can get him better but he has to have talent”

👉🏽 Moral of the story: Stop blaming coaches. Start developing your kid the right way. Respect the process.

🔥 Big School vs Small School? The Debate Is Real.
Coach Clark (National Recruiting Expert) and Derrick Tatum (Elite Talent Football)—two of the best recruiters in the country—had a real convo about one of the biggest questions parents ask:

“Should my son go to a big high school or a smaller one?”

Coach Clark says:
👉🏽 “Play with the dawgs. Big-time schools with winning programs bring more exposure. College coaches go where the talent and competition are.”

Derrick Tatum says:
👉🏽 “Go where you can actually get on the field. If your son isn’t starting or getting reps, the exposure doesn’t matter. Be real about where your son is in his development.”

Here’s the truth: They’re both right.
It really comes down to where your son is at in his journey:

✅ If he’s ready to compete at a high level, iron sharpens iron. Big schools can open doors.
✅ But if he’s still developing, he may need to be in a place where he can play, get film, and grow.

🚨 Don’t just chase the name of a school. Chase the right fit for your son’s situation.

Derrick Tatum & Rod Clark on the Problem with Football Development—Parks & Rec Have Changed

Me and Rod Clark were talking about where the real issue is with football development, and one thing is clear—Parks and Rec ain’t what it used to be.

Back in the day, Parks and Rec football was where kids learned the fundamentals.

It’s where they got tough, learned how to play as a team, and had real coaches that actually taught the game.

But now? Everybody wants to play travel ball.

Travel ball is cool, but not every kid is ready for that level.

The problem is, with all the talent chasing travel teams, Parks and Rec is drying up.

There aren’t enough good coaches left in the local leagues, and a lot of kids who should be learning the game first are getting thrown into high-level competition too soon.

Another big issue? Cities and schools aren’t investing in these programs like they used to.

Fields aren’t maintained, there’s no structured training, and families aren’t seeing the value in putting their kids in rec ball anymore.

But if we really want to fix development in football, it starts there.

We need cities and schools to put resources back into Parks and Rec.

We need to bring in better coaches, upgrade facilities, and make rec ball competitive again.

Because at the end of the day, if kids don’t get the right foundation early, by the time they hit high school, they’re already behind.

Football development isn’t just about high school and college—it starts at the grassroots level.

If we don’t fix Parks and Rec, we’re gonna see more kids underdeveloped, fewer making it to the next level, and football as a whole suffering.

Derrick Tatum & Rod Clark on the Change in Youth Sports—Good Coaches Are Walking Away.

Me and Rod Clark were talking about how youth sports ain’t what it used to be.

The game itself is still the same, but the coaching side? That’s different.

The reality is, good coaches are walking away because of overbearing parents.

Rod brought up a real point—parents today aren’t realistic about their kid’s ability, and that’s causing a lot of unnecessary tension between them and coaches.

Instead of trusting the process, they’re fighting it.

He told me about a situation where he tried to develop a kid who, honestly, just wasn’t good enough.

Now, most coaches would’ve just cut the kid and moved on. But Rod? He actually tried to help him improve.

But when the kid didn’t play, his dad came at Rod crazy, disrespecting him over playing time.

That’s the problem. Parents want honest coaches, but when those same coaches tell them the truth, they don’t want to hear it.

Every dad thinks their son is a D1 athlete, but not every kid is built for that level.

Some kids need more time, some need a different path, and some—just keeping it real—won't make it past high school ball.

But instead of accepting that and helping their kid find the best opportunity for them, parents start blaming the coaches, the system, the politics—everything but reality.

And that’s why so many great coaches are retiring. They’re tired of dealing with the nonsense.

At the end of the day, if a coach tells you something about your son’s ability, listen.

If he’s saying your son isn’t ready, instead of getting mad, ask what needs to improve.

Because attacking the coach won’t change the truth—but fixing the problem might.

Derrick Tatum & Rod Clark Debate: Go Where You Can Play vs. Go Where the Ballers Are

Man, me and Rod Clark go back and forth on this one all the time.

Rod is a local legend in Atlanta football, and he knows the game when it comes to recruiting and consulting.

But when it comes to picking the right school, we see it differently.

I say, go somewhere where you can play and get film.

Because at the end of the day, if you’re not on the field, you’re invisible.

College coaches aren’t offering kids based on hype—they’re offering based on film.

If you’re sitting on the bench at a big-name school, nobody is scouting you.

Rod’s argument? Go where the ballers are at. He believes that if you’re in an elite program, surrounded by top-tier talent, you’ll be battle-tested, coached up, and recruited because coaches naturally recruit where the dogs are.

And listen, I get that. If you’re a legit D1 prospect, a super elite talent, that approach works.

But my thing is, not everybody is in that category.

Parents get caught up in chasing these big-school dreams, moving their kids to powerhouse programs, only to watch them sit for two or three years.

And what happens? They lose confidence, they stop developing, and by the time they’re seniors, it’s too late. Meanwhile, the kid who stayed at a mid-tier school, started as a sophomore, and built three years of film is the one getting offers.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the name of the school—it’s about opportunity.

If you’re truly an elite talent, you’ll rise anywhere. But if you’re on the fence, you better go where you can shine. Because hype don’t get scholarships—film does.
