Papa Salt Gin - Long Drinks

Today and Saturday I'm returning to the Papa Salt Gin that we received in our August box from The Curious Drinker.

In this post I have a couple of longer drinks, one with soda - The OG as suggested in the magazine - and a G&T made with my choice of tonic.

First up is the Papa Salt & Soda, which is made with 60 ml Papa Salt Gin, topped up with 150ml Britvic Soda Water. It's in a highball glass filled with ice and garnished with a slice of blood orange.

This was a bit too weak for me. The soda water left the gin too diluted and lost too much of the flavour.

The second is my Papa Salt Gin & Tonic. It's made with 75ml Papa Salt Gin, 150ml Coast Tonic Water and a few dashes of saline solution. It goes into a glass over ice and is garnished with a slice of orange. I added one of my Bathing Belle glass markers too.

I quite enjoyed this one. The bigger pour of gin is my standard G&T ratio, and I think it worked nicely with the tonic. I initially found it a touch harsh for the gin, so added the saline just to soften the edges slightly.

The last of my Papa Salt serves, for not at least with be a set of three that I have up on Saturday.

Throwback Thursday

Alcohol Free Fluère Smoked Agave

As I've just completed my set of five tequila cocktails, I thought that for today's Thursday Throwback I'd go back to November 2023 and this alcohol-free Fluère Smoked Agave.

I don't use many non-alcoholic spirits because I find they lack substance or richness. That was still true with this, but I rather enjoyed the smoky flavour. I tried to address the texture aspect by mixing it with syrups and sodas, which definitely helped, and actually I quite enjoyed these.

The drink in the short tumbler is based on an Old Fashioned, with about 80ml Fluère, 10ml agave nectar and a few dashes of Orange Angostura Bitters, garnished with a caramelised orange slice.

In the highball glass, I have a longer version, with 60ml Fluère, 10ml agave nectar, a few dashes of Angostura Bitters, and a pinch of Maldon Sea Salt flakes, topped with Coast Maple Soda.

Both of these were something that I was very happy to drink, without feeling that I was missing out on the alcohol.

Isle of Lewis Camas Ùige Gin

I mentioned on Friday that while I preferred the Isle of Lewis Camas Ùige Gin from our Craft Gin Club box with a plain tonic to the grapefruit one, I had an idea for another that I'd like to try it with.

Well I found my Coast Tonic in my stash and gave it a go. It's a tonic that I rather like anyway and I thought it might go well with the slight coastal notes in this gin. I didn't use a garnish as I wanted to try it without additional flavours being introduced.

I'm pleased to say that I thought this was my favourite tonic combination. It had an overall softness that was very pleasant and the gin wasn't overwhelmed. I do feel that this gin still gets a little lost with my standard one part gin to two parts tonic ratio, so I think I would have this at a 1:1 instead.

This was good, but my preferred serve for this gin is coming up tomorrow ...

@fynodereedistillery Elder Shee Manx Dry Gin.

Fynoderee Manx Dry Gin Elder Shee Edition from the Isle of Man is a celebration of the Island’s many tales of mythical faeries who reside deep within the roots of the “Tramman” - the Manx word for Elder Tree. In Manx Gaelic, the word “Shee” means both faerie and peace.

Elder Shee gin is distilled with elderflower, heady floral notes give way to the citrus tang of pink grapefruit and lemon, and herbal aromatics of lemon thyme and rosemary.

Pair this craft gin with @coast_fresh British Tonic and garnish with lemon

Usually I love Friday evenings, but I’m still recovering from the lurgy and I have to work tomorrow so tonight I’m posting a serve of @papasaltgin that I tried over the summer.

60ml @papasaltgin Coastal Gin
@coast_fresh Japanese Soda water

Build over ice in a high ball glass and famous with an orange wedge.

A simple serve that hits the spot.

Iwate Homare Junmai Ginjo from Maisake

Neat and the Mai Sake Spritzer

Recently, I was lucky enough to win the Mai Sake Spritzer bundle giveaway from Maisake. The prize was a bottle of Iwate Homare Junmai Ginjo, a bottle of Coast Japanese Soda Water, and one of the gorgeous Audre glasses from Lagom.

The sake is made by the Iwate Meijo Brewery in Oshu, Japan. It uses Yuinoka rice grown in the local area, and is made in the traditional 'kimoto' brewing method where the fermentation starter is pounded repeatedly with long poles to encourage lactic acid to form naturally – a labour-intensive process that doubles the brewing time. It's a light sake, with a fresh melon flavour, which I enjoyed in my neat tasting of it.

Obviously I also made the Mai Sake Spritzer. The recommended serve was 60ml sake and 30ml soda water, and garnished with some slices of fresh apple. This isn't how I'd usually drink a saké personally, but is a great drink for a sunny day in the garden, when you want something light and refreshing.

The Coast Japanese Soda, with its slight salinity, was also good on its own, and I'm sure would work with a coastal gin in a Collins style cocktail. Unfortunately I'd already finished it before I thought of that, or I'd have given it a try!

And of course you know I do love my glassware, and the lagom glass makes a beautiful addition to my collection.

This was a lovely prize that I was delighted to win, so my grateful thanks to @drinkmaisake for picking out my name!

And of course, with a whole bottle of the sake, I made some other cocktails too, so they'll be up in the next few days.
