'Rumah Ginevra'
Composed by Arya Pugala Kitti @aryapkitti
Lyrics by Wirawan Cuanda

As the last song of the song cycle Emosi dan Sensasi, ‘Rumah Ginevra’ is the only song that is free from any dark background story. The poem was inspired by the author’s experience in the city of York, where his perception of place and people fuses.

‘Rumah Ginevra’ translates into Ginevra’s House, a pun of Ginevra House @ginevra.house, the name of Wirawan’s dear friend, who is also the co-composer of Bhishma, a song cycle for baritone and gamelan. The song paints the longing and sentiment evoked by sensory perceptions of various objects around the house when he lived there with her and @coates_frances , such as the Ethiopian music they hear in dinners, the creaking of the wooden floorboards, or the floating dust from their purple sofa.

In this song, Kitti focuses on word painting, imagining the sound world translated from the text. In general, the composition aims to convey warm, homey feelings, with glimpses of good memories preserved in the song. The song opens up with constant otherworldly tunes and twinkling chirps of ornaments, painting a quiet fantasy landscape.

Since Ginevra, the muse of this song, is also a gamelan artist, there is a sense of transformational process from diatonic to pentatonic material to reflect the gamelan tunes. There is also a comical sense after the dramatic building up on the phrase “terikat oleh tempe dan sambal”, highlighting how mundane things, such as tempe and chilli paste, unexpectedly lead to a deeper bond between the poet and the muse. The final phrase “yapapahuaa” is taken from her habit of vocalising the melodies that either is popping up or is being contemplated, and the non-metric, free rhythm piano sequence accompanies the voice to fade into eternity of the memory.
