✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XXXIX: « O Love divine » ✨🕊️

After Theodora and Didymus leave this world together for Paradise, Irene remains to give us the final words of their story.

And perhaps its most important message.

Theodora and Didymus are gone, but through their courage, faith and love, they have proved that love is stronger than death. 🤍

Then comes one of the most beautiful and spiritual choruses Handel ever wrote.

The whole community joins together in praise of divine love, asking for their souls to be filled with the same fire, inspiration and faith, and to discover the glorious source whose streams have shone so brightly through the lives of Theodora and Didymus. ✨🕊️

« Ere this their doom is past, and they are gone
To prove, that Love is stronger far than Death.

Oh Love divine, thou source of flame,
Of glory and all joy!
Let equal fire our souls inflame,
And equal zeal employ:
That we the glorious spring may know,
Whose streams appear’d so bright below! »

And with these words, our Theodora Sunday journey comes to an end. 🤍

It has been such a joy to share our concert of Theodora with you every Sunday, little by little, from the opening notes of the Overture to this final silence.

This concert was a truly magical moment for all of us, and we are so happy to have been able to share the whole story with you. We hope that the music, the extraordinary journey of Theodora and Didymus, and their message of courage, faith and love have moved you as deeply as they moved us.

Thank you for following this journey with us.

Wishing you love, light, and everything this wonderful music speaks of. 🤍🕊️✨

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XXXVII: « Streams of pleasure » ✨🕊️

After Valens delivers his cruel judgement, condemning both Theodora and Didymus to death, Septimius is devastated.

How can such beauty and courage be destroyed? How can two extraordinary souls be condemned for their love and faith?

But Didymus answers with unexpected serenity. 🤍

He gently reassures his friend that neither he nor Theodora should be considered unhappy. They do not despise life, but they believe that the suffering they are about to endure is a small price for the eternal joy awaiting them in Heaven.

And suddenly, the darkness of their sentence gives way to an extraordinary vision. ✨

As Didymus draws closer to death, he begins to see Paradise opening before him. He describes what he sees: endless flowing streams, heavenly fruits, golden thrones and crowns of stars. A world of extraordinary beauty, where the struggles of earthly life disappear and the soul finds eternal peace.

In this aria, his acceptance becomes something greater: a moment of grace. Paradise is no longer a distant promise. It is a reality he can already see, growing clearer as he approaches it. 🕊️

« And such beauty suffer?

Such useful valour be destroy’d?

Destroy’d, Alas! by an unhappy constancy!

Yet deem us not unhappy, gentle friend, Nor rash; for life we neither hate nor scorn: But think it a cheap purchase for the prize Reserv’d in heaven for purity and faith.

Streams of pleasure ever flowing, Fruits ambrosial ever growing, Golden thrones, Starry crowns Are the triumphs of the blest: When from life’s dull labour free, Clad with immortality, They enjoy a lasting rest. »

One of the most beautiful visions of Heaven in Theodora.

As Didymus approaches his final moments, Paradise opens before his eyes.

Suffering gives way to beauty, fear gives way to faith, and the promise of eternal rest fills his soul with peace. 🤍🕊️

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XXXIII :« From virtue’s spring »✨🕊️

After Irene’s vision of Heaven, the scene returns to the Romans.

Valens is ready to condemn Didymus, giving him a final choice between repentance and death.

But Theodora suddenly appears and asks to take the punishment herself, hoping to save the man she loves. 🤍

Septimius witnesses their courage and sacrifice, and is deeply moved by what he sees.

For him, their actions reveal something greater than Roman law: true virtue, generosity, and love.

His aria becomes a plea for justice and compassion. ✨

« Is it a Christian virtue then
To rescue from justice one
Condemn’d by your authority?

Had your sentence doom’d her but to death,
I then might have deplored your cruelty,
And should not have oppos’d it.

Take him hence,
And lead him to repentance or to death!

But that my doom! You may inflict it here
With legal justice; there ’tis cruelty;

Dwells there such virtuous courage in the sex?
Preserve them, oh ye Gods, preserve them both!

From virtue springs each gen’rous deed,
That claims our grateful pray’r.
Let justice for the hero plead,
And pity save the fair. »

A beautiful moment where even a Roman soldier is transformed by the courage and love he sees before him. 🤍🕊️

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XXXII: “New scenes of joy” ✨🕊️

After Irene tries to convince Theodora to stay, Theodora leaves to go and save Didymus.

Irene understands that she cannot stop her. Instead, her thoughts turn toward Heaven. 🤍

She imagines Theodora leaving the sorrows of this world behind and entering a new world filled with joy.

Like mist disappearing before the rising sun, sorrow fades away and gives place to a glorious new day. ☀️✨

« She’s gone! disdaining liberty and life,
And ev’ry honour this frail life can give.
Devotion bids aspire to nobler things,
To boundless love and joys ineffable:
And such her expectation from kind Heaven.

New scenes of joy come crowding on,
While sorrow fleets away:
Like mists before the rising sun,
That gives a glorious day. »

An inspired aria that seems to open a window onto another world.

Sorrow disappears, and light takes its place. 🤍🕊️

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XXXI: “To life and joy I go” ✨🕊️

After the Christians give thanks for Theodora’s rescue, a messenger arrives with devastating news.

Didymus has been captured and now faces death for saving Theodora.

When she hears this, she immediately knows what she must do. 🤍

Rather than flee, she chooses to give herself up in order to save the man she loves.

Irene, like a loving spiritual mother, begs her to stay, but Theodora has already made her decision.

What follows is a moving duet between love and protection, duty and sacrifice. 🕊️

« Undaunted in the court stands Didymus,
Virtuously proud of rescued innocence.
But vain to save the gen’rous hero’s life
Are all entreaties, ev’n from Romans vain;
And high-enrag’d the President protests,
Should he regain the fugitive, no more
To try her with the fear of infamy,
But with the terrors of a cruel death.

Ah, Theodora! Whence this sudden change
From grief’s pale looks to looks of red’ning joy?

O my Irene, Heaven is kind!
And Valens too is kind, to give me pow’r
To execute in turn my gratitude,
While safe my honour. - Stay me not, dear friend
Only assist me with a proper dress,
That I may ransom the too gen’rous youth.

Whither, princess, do you fly?
Sure to suffer, sure to die?

No, no, Irene, no,
To life and joy I go!

Vain attempt - oh stay, oh stay

Duty calls! I must obey! »

One of the most moving moments in Theodora.

Love becomes stronger than fear, and sacrifice becomes the path to eternal joy. 🤍🕊️
