Mirka Mora’s newly framed oil on canvas, When The Forest Listens (1990), forms part of our current exhibition, The Pull of Things. Across this selection of works, Mirka returns to her iconic motif of the embrace, where figures hold close whatever they cherish most — a child, companion, or animal — pressed gently to the heart.

In When The Forest Listens, bodies emerge through vivid fields of colour and texture, suspended within the surrounding forest. More spontaneous and less polished than some of her other works, the painting speaks to emotional connection, family, and warmth.

A selection of Mirka’s work is now on view at the gallery as part of our current group exhibition, The Pull of Things.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am–4pm, and Saturday, 12–4pm.

Painting by Melbourne artist Darren McDonald @cockknee opening at Home on Wednesday the 20th of May.

“…I came across the church of purgatory while visiting Lipari in 2025. The artist, fisherman and tourist guide Giuseppe Costanza had made a diorama of village life and the fisherman of the village. The work was also based on the invasion by the Turks and the damage done, I was lucky to meet Giuseppe and visited the church every day…”

William Mora Galleries is delighted to invite you to the opening of The Pull of Things on Thursday 30 April 2026 from 6–8 pm.

The exhibition features work by Lisa Barmby, Steve Cox, Darren McDonald, Deanne Gilson, Jo Lane, Helen Maudsley, Mirka Mora, Therese Strauss, and John Perceval, alongside a performance choreographed by Katrina Rank.

The works have been either created specifically for this exhibition or carefully selected. In some ways, the exhibition is akin to a blind date—its full shape only revealed upon encounter.

The Pull of Things explores the ways in which artists depict what they long for: those elusive or essential things that stir love, obsession, and yearning. Whether seeking a treasured object, a lost paradise, or an inner truth, each work reflects a pursuit of desire, both literal and metaphorical.

The exhibition also engages with the enduring genres of still life and portraiture across painting and photography. The word “still,” shared by both, suggests an absence of movement, yet equally evokes the quiet passage of time. These images persist—they remain, resonating with memory, vitality, and desire.

Each participating artist presents up to four works, offering their own response to what it means to desire, to cherish, and to remember.

The Pull of Things will be opened by Dr Philipa Rothfield (Philosophy and Politics, La Trobe University).

Creature 1–3, choreographed by Katrina Rank, will be performed on Saturdays 9, 16, and 23 May at 2 pm.

We look forward to seeing you.
