Release: Artisan SakeMaker Marks 20 Years on Granville Island and Looks to the Future of Canadian Sake ~ The Vancouver sake winery enters its anniversary season with OSAKE, CMC Sake + Wine Merchants, Sake & Tapas Central, BC-grown rice, Orizée skincare, and new rice trials in British Columbia (link in bio).

As sake reaches more markets around the world, one of Canada’s original sake producers is marking 20 years on @granville_island.

Founded by Masa and Yukiko Shiroki, Artisan SakeMaker has spent two decades helping Canadian drinkers understand sake through wine, food, rice, and place. OSAKE, the company’s small-batch sake collection, was developed for aroma, texture, acidity, umami, temperature, and the way people eat on the West Coast. CMC Sake + Wine Merchants, its sister company and Japanese sake import agency established in 2001, adds the other side of that perspective, connecting Canadian audiences back to the producers, regions, and traditions of Japan.

The anniversary reaches well beyond the bottle. Artisan SakeMaker’s rice and sake kasu now show up in kitchens including @restaurant_pearlmorissette, @pluvio_restaurant_and_rooms, @acornvancouver, @tojos_restaurant, @burdockandco, and @kishimoto.restaurant. Orizée skincare carries the same circular thinking into beauty, connecting sake kasu to Vogue’s recent coverage of fermented rice in Chinese, Japanese and Korean skincare.

The next chapter is just as agricultural as it is culinary. Artisan SakeMaker is continuing its BC-grown rice work in Abbotsford while looking ahead to dry, direct-seeded upland rice trials in British Columbia, a timely experiment as climate pressure, water use, crop diversification, and food security become larger questions for farmers. @eatdrinkbuybc

This summer, Sake & Tapas Central will bring the anniversary into Granville Island’s watch party season, with sake flights, CMC flights, cocktails, small plates, match-day viewing just steps from where the sake is made, and takeout options for the island’s public spaces.
