2024 dump ❤️

2024 was a hard year filled with many good moments. I attended my first birth as a doula and supported 2 families, met one of my favorite authors, went to Barbados for a destination wedding, spent time with friends and family, turned 25, presented the results of my masters thesis and completed my degree program. I’m extremely grateful to my village who got me through the year.

I look forward to what 2025 will bring. Happy New Year Everyone! ❤️

Humbled and excited to call myself one of the members of the inaugural cohort of Health Equity Scholars at the Brown University School of Public Health.

Indeed, "the cake is baked" (Iyk,yk😂). But the bakery has only just opened! 👨‍🍳

Ever Discover your Niche? 🔥

There is much truth to Frank Ocean’s “work hard in silence and let success be your noise.” For Shaunessey Burks (‘23), this Memphis, TN native worked hard to be where she is now, pursuing a Master of Public Health.

“During my first semester in college, I was convinced that I would fail chemistry. I was a first-generation student receiving a full scholarship, and I was afraid of failing the class and losing my scholarship. When I realized I'd be getting a C at best if I got an A on the final, I dropped the class because I thought there was no way I'd get a C.

During my senior year, I retook the class and received an A. I didn't struggle as much because my anxiety about being first-generation had subsided and I was able to focus on learning more. I would advise other first-generation students who are experiencing imposter syndrome to persevere; you belong and will soon find your place. Just go at your own pace to win the race.”

Through life’s twists and turns, Shaunessey strives to make her role model proud: ✨

“Every day, my grandfather inspires me to keep striving towards my life goals. When he saw me stressed, he would say, ‘You only get one life, so live it to the fullest.’ My grandfather died of pneumonia in 2014. He became ill as a result of his working conditions and developed occupational asthma. He spent 30 years working in a urethane plant in charge of the production of polyurethane products. Working in polyurethane rubber and adhesives manufacturing exposed him to high concentrations of isocyanates. Occupational asthma developed into bronchitis, and pneumonia quickly took over.

At the time, I wondered what I could do to prevent this from happening to another family. I discovered public health, and my niche within public health is worker protection, which is why I want to become an industrial hygienist. My grandfather’s death could have been avoided if the company had taken precautions to limit his exposure to the chemical. Everyone deserves to return home safely at the end of the day, and I intend to do so if given the responsibility.”

Congrats, Shaunessey! Keep going. 💪
