How do AI editing tools shape the stories we tell? Join us tomorrow, September 29, for the REALITY CHECK: AI + Documentary Working Group keynote presentation: STORY MACHINE: Documentary Film Editing and the Digital Process, presented by Nick Hector, ACE. Story Machine: Documentary Film Editing and the Digital Process examines the artistic consequences of assistive AI on documentary editorial practice. Drawing on a practitioner-based comparative study in which the same raw materials were edited using contemporary digital methods and analogue-inspired strategies, the presentation considers how editorial tools shape narrative form. It argues that AI-assisted workflows tend to encourage non-linear, dialogue-driven structures, while analogue approaches foster more immersive narratives organized around time and place. Ultimately, Story Machine proposes that documentary filmmakers must resist digital tools that impose mechanical order on the emotional complexity and inherent unpredictability of human experience. Presenter: Nick Hector, ACE, is an Associate Professor and Chair of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication, Media, and Film at the University of Windsor. He has worked in documentary production for over 40 years as a film editor and producer. As documentaries about and made with AI continue to grow, shirin anlen, AI Research Technologist and Impact Manager at WITNESS, and Kat Cizek from MIT Open Documentary Lab (@opendoclab), identify recurring patterns that can reinforce industry narratives instead of challenging them. From the “AI expert” archetype to the endless question of “what makes us human?”, these red flags invite us to think more critically about the stories we tell about AI, and the voices that are missing. MIT Open Documentary Lab today announced that Lab Director Sarah Wolozin @sarah_wolozin is stepping down from her role, effective September 1, 2026. Wolozin’s departure marks the culmination of fifteen years of leadership that has shaped the global documentary media field. Under Sarah’s tenure, Open Documentary Lab has flourished, reinforcing its position as an industry catalyst that unites, sustains, and grows a diverse creative field. Working with Lab founder and Principal Investigator, Professor William Uricchio, Wolozin served as the first director, designing its programming, resources, research, and convenings, forging partnerships supporting artists and scholars, and creating opportunities for students. We are deeply grateful to Sarah for all she has built and stewarded. The Open Documentary Lab and Co-Creation Studio will continue key projects while restructuring in the fall of 2026 and will announce a new programmatic framework. Tomorrow, we’ll be presenting TIDELANDS at DEMO 2026 at the New Museum as part of our year with @newinc ❤️‍🔥 TIDELANDS has been years in the making—a collaborative effort to imagine what life along a transformed coastline might look like in the year 2100. We’re incredibly excited to finally share a glimpse of the world we’ve been building. Huge gratitude to our team and collaborators who are bringing this project to life: @geckoe, @ian.haut, @legit_potato, and @rettieri. WORLDING réunit une cohorte de projets provenant du monde entier qui explorent comment les technologies immersives et les approches de design centrées sur les communautés peuvent faire émerger de nouveaux récits collectifs autour des enjeux climatiques. In the high-altitude heart of Ladakh, spirituality and veneration is an omnipresent rhythm that pulses throughout daily life. At the Matho Monastery, the only Sakya school stronghold in the region, we witnessed the community combine deep devotion with a mesmerising blend of meditation and movement. As the monks rehearse for the upcoming Matho Nagrang Festival, every ritual step and every beat of the drum feels like a prayer in motion. This is a sacred preparation for the arrival of the Rongtsan – the two oracles who emerge from months of isolated meditation to offer predictions for the year ahead. This spiritual energy is mirrored in the landscape itself, the mountains stand as silent but breathtaking guardians across the region of Ladakh. Join us for a Public Talk (online) - Examination of Burden of Other People’s Dreams: The creative process behind a film/book story world Joe Bini and Tabitha Jackson @tabula4 will discuss the animating ideas and creative process behind Joe Bini’s latest immersive story world piece, Burden of Other People’s Dreams: Book One, Ganymede. Best described as a “book-film,” Burden of Other People’s Dreams: Book One, Ganymede is an e-book that comes to life as a cinema experience, designed to be taken in by one person at a time, at their own pace. Similar in ways to a graphic novel, it crosses the interiority of being a reader with the visceral presence of being a film watcher and presents a story world framed in three storytelling traditions: oral, written word, and cinematic. It also questions the role of authorship, believing that stories are a shared experience that exist in an in-between space. Over the course of his personal filmmaking career, Bini has been developing a more conversational, everyday language of filmmaking. This has led him to his current project, Burden of Other People’s Dreams. Showing clips from foundational films in his editing and personal work, Bini will discuss the steps that led to the language of his book film. There’s magic in a steaming bowl of Thukpa when the Himalayan winds are biting. While our visuals for SHAN capture the vast, silent beauty of Ladakh, the reality behind the lens was filled with the rich aromas of Momos and the rustic textures of Chutagi and Skyu. These weren’t just meals; they were the fuel that kept our creative engines running no matter the altitude. Even the simplest comforts, like a plate of golden French toast, became a morning ritual that made the sub-zero temperatures feel that bit more bearable! A massive shoutout to our incredible guides, hosts and co-creators. The Dosmochey festival at Leh Palace is a pretty incredible sight. It’s a major event for the local Buddhist community, held to clear out negative energy and bring in peace for the year ahead. The monks perform the Cham dances wearing these massive, intricate masks to represent protector deities. We shot the whole thing in high-end 360° for SHAN: Among humans, saints and snow leopards.
