“Salvador was named after Christ. He’s in his late seventies. He is dressed in damaged cowboy clothes and stares at the road. I have seen him for years sit in the exact same spot, static as a statue. Only the smoke of his pipe would reveal he was alive.”

As I’m cleaning my house like a maniac I’ve found this story which is one of the first personal pieces I signed out of college about 16 years ago. I read the first sentence and giggled. I was by then editing this zine called FUEGO with my friend @cokebartrina and we gave zero fucks about everything, except for making things and finding joy in the making. This freedom is something after-MySpace social media has murdered and creators can rarely experience. By the time we decided to publish a monograph on hats called “Great minds think alike” someone quickly came to mine for the piece we were doing. Someone I had fleetingly seen a few times from a car window. —really?

This cowboy was a true character, some kind of a renegade sitting by the side of a town road I had driven past for years and years. He would pull down his hat to every honking truck and children would force parents to pull over and get a picture. My grandpa didn’t know him personally and yet generously enough made the magic happen for us. We traveled all the way from Barcelona mainly to prove my intuition right upon meeting such incandescent, proud and peculiar gentleman.

Urban Cowboy, a film starred by John Travolta in 1980 seemed to be the starting point of Salvador’s story. He explained, without a pinch of resentment, how he could only afford his first cowboy hat once his children were grown-ups. He found pleasure in collecting things, other than hats: he had over 800 lighters and 10 grandchildren. As soon as we stepped foot on his property he apologised about a bathtub just laying there next to the wandering chicken. He and his wife and his dogs and his cats lived quite simply: no electricity but a flat screen powered with car batteries. Little decor besides a mugshot of his eldest, ceramics and a frame with his press clippings.

(Begging your pardon, text is finished in the comments)
