Japan's Ryoji Watanabe evened the score in his series with Malaysia's Soh Wai Ching at the Empire State Building Run-Up, claiming this year's title with an 11:18 effort up the 86-story, 1,576-step course.

Across four career head-to-head ESBRU matchups, the Asian towerrunners now sit at two wins apiece. Soh finished 9 seconds back, in 11:27, to even out the second-place finishes between the two as well. Soh beat Watanabe in 2022 and 2023 before Watanabe answered back in 2024 and again this year.

While those four years constitute all of Watanabe's ESBRU appearances, Soh's second-place finish marks his fourth such placing in seven career appearances to go along with three overall wins.

Slower conditions across the board also made this the first Empire State Building Run-Up since 1989 without a sub-11:00 finish.

New York towerrunner Sproule Love took third overall in 12:32, claiming top US male honors for the first time since 2024 and marking his highest overall placing since a third-place finish in 2018. Cole Hetzel followed in fourth overall at 12:34 to take second among American finishers, while David Roeske rounded out the US podium in 13:05.

In the women's race, Austria's Annemarie Wilhelm took the top spot with a 13:32 event debut effort. Japanese towerrunner Yuko Tateishi finished runner-up in 13:45, matching her highest placing, which she achieved during her 2024 performance.

Anna Carlson placed third overall in 14:07 to lead the domestic field, setting a 22-second PR over her previous best set in 2019, and a major jump from her 15:25 effort last year, which was her first ESBRU appearance since that 2019 performance. Reigning overall women's champion Shari Klarfeld took second among US women and fourth overall in 14:27, while Chicagoland towerrunner Jill Paha completed the American women's podium in 15:37.

In a neck-and-neck sprint through the rooftop finish line, Italian towerrunner Fabio Ruga narrowly escapes with the win over Malaysia's Soh Wai Ching at this year's Empire State Building Run-Up. The two were nearly even the entire race up the 86-story, 1,576-step course, with both reaching the 20th floor split in 1:37, and Soh one second ahead, 7:50 to 7:51, at the 65th story. In the end, Ruga came out on top, finishing with an 11-second PR of 10:47 officially over Soh, who clocked in at 10:48. In his seventh ESBRU appearance going back to 2012, Ruga had collected three straight third-place finishes prior to his win this year. He also almost overtook Soh at the finish line for second place last year in what was his first time breaking the 11-minute mark. Taipei's Ching Chun Lo (11:11) rounded out this year's men's podium. Meanwhile, US towerrunner Cole Hetzel knocked even more time off his continually improving ESBRU efforts, finishing in 11:13 as the fastest American on the day—a 42-second improvement over his most recent appearance two years ago. Hetzel was more than a minute ahead of New York towerrunners David Roeske (12:29) and Alex Workman (12:34), who were the only other US men faster than 13:00. For the women, it was New York runner and towerrunner Shari Klarfeld finally claiming the top women's spot with a 14:07 effort. Klarfeld, a longtime ESBRU veteran with other New York stair race victories to her name, has previous other ESBRU podium finishes and has even been the fastest American during years other international competitors had finished faster than her, but can now list ESBRU winner on her racing resume. Rounding out the overall women's podium was Hong Kong's Tsz Yau Li (14:26) just ahead of Slovakia's Kamila Chomanicova (14:28). Among the US women, the third time was the charm for Chicagoland towerrunner Jill Paha, who adjusted her race strategy en route to a PR of 14:39, while Western Michigan youth runner and towerrunning prodigy Nicole Robbins (15:00) fell just shy of going sub-15:00 herself.
