2026 Recondo Hundo Wrap-up Thoughts:

These dozens of individual physical events during the 30 day grind leading up to 03/21 day, are first and foremost to honor the memory of our Recon Brothers who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and to thier Gold Star families who are left behind.

Every Rep, every squat, every pull, I had many brothers, memories, and families on my mind. This small personal sacrifice of Pain, Suffering, Agony, and Perseverance again reminded me of my/our heros who came before..

Quitting or skipping a day wasn’t even a thought, even when @kelli.ramsey thought I was pushing myself way too hard, and even when I didn’t have much gas or time in the tank at the end.

Our Reconnaissance Creed defines the elite ethos of we as Reconnaissance Marines, emphasizing personal choice, intense mental/physical discipline, and unwavering dedication to mission accomplishment. It highlights sacrificing comfort, maintaining high ethical standards, and overcoming all obstacles without quitting.

"Conquering all obstacles, both large and small, I shall never quit.
To quit, to surrender, to give up is to fail.
To be a Recon Marine is to surpass failure;
To overcome, to adapt and to do whatever it takes to complete the mission."

A special thanks to those that have encouraged us and supported our efforts financially over the last 30 days.

Never Above You. Never Below You. Always Beside You.

The 1st phase of the 2025 Marine Reconnaissance Foundation Gold Star family retreat was the 16th annual Recon challenge. On 25 April starting just after sunrise, the challenge began with over 20 teams of 2 who started and finished the grueling course. Each team upheld the high standards of the Reconnaissance Creed, and honored the families of our teammates who are no longer with us, but will always be in spirit.

During the arduous event, the competing teams covered 25+ miles with a minimum combat load, running, swimming, rucking, climbing, all while representing this year’s Recon Gold Star families, and many other families while each wearing a dogtag with the name of thier fallen teammate who they competed for.

12 of the vteams represented the following Recon Gold Star families who were present, as part of the Marine Reconnaissance Foundation’s 7th Annual Gold Star Family Retreat.

Sgt Colin Arslanbas (2nd Recon Bn)
Sgt Stephen LaRiviere (2nd Recon Bn)
Sgt Gary Johnston (3rd Recon Bn)
SSgt Charlie Cartwright (1st MSOB)
2ndLt Terry Graves (3rd Force Co.)
Cpl Patrick Murphy (1st Force Co.)
SSgt Caleb Medley (1st Force Co.)
Cpl Ryan (1st Recon Bn) & Cpl Riley Pape (1st Recon Bn)
Cpl Alex Romero (3rd Recon Bn)

Gold Star Family Retreat: Gunstock Ranch

Our families visited Gunstock Ranch on the North Shore of Oahu to participate in a reforestation project. Each family was able to plant a native Hawaiian milo tree in support of the ranches effort to reestablish native the Hawaiian forest and to combat invasive species.

The trees were planted by each family in honor of their loved one lost and our fallen teammates, with the intention to anchor each families roots in our ʻāina, the soil of Oahu Hawaii. We discussed how by the planting of the milo tree, each family was helping reestablish Hawaiian endemic plants and leaving a permanent and lasting living monument in memory here in Hawaii. Milo trees grow up to 60 feet in height, each tree is geotagged so the families will be able to revisit the trees as they grow strong and tall in the years to come.

A huge thank you to our friends @gunstockranch , @hawaiianlegacyforest
and our good friend McKenzie Highsmith for being with us each year since the first retreat, guiding our families in this powerful tribute.
