Congrats to Abe Underhill for getting the Watershed Innovations Grant Program (WINS) Grant! He’s affiliated with both us and the Large Lakes Observatory, and will be doing his research on Steel Lake using the WINS grant in October. Abe will be using geochemical analysis (XRF and Radiometric Isotope dating) of annually layered sediments from Minnesota lakes to produce records of past precipitation amounts and stream flow; he’ll be presenting his research in the fall at the GSA conference in San Antonio.

I feel like department appreciation post is in order I feel so lucky to be graduating in a department full of my best friends and the most supportive professors. These past four years I’ve met the coolest people and have done some of the coolest things, and that’s thanks to picking the right major lol.

Good job to our six undergraduate students for presenting their research today! Izzy presented on saltating winds, Nate presented on copper veins along the Douglas Fault, Cami presented on biodiversity in the Miocene, Cole presented on XRF analysis of lake sediments, Raeann presented on the Denham Formation and Grace presented on micro fractures along the Douglas Fault.

This week is Earth Science Week (AGI), so we’d like to show off all the cool research that our faculty and students are working on! Below is a summary of Abe’s research: Some lakes record annual or seasonal changes, called varves. My research will use varved lake sediments from Elk Lake in Itasca State Park, MN to develop high-resolution chronology using X-ray fluorescence to identify deposited mineral assemblages, and testing alternative methods’ ability to identify and count varves from images or data reliably (software, XRF, etc.). To preserve laminations during extraction, a freeze-core method is used. Developing this method, along with storage and handling of frozen cores, will be key. My research is part of a larger work that seeks to understand how the hydroclimate evolves in a changing climate in the Upper Mississippi River Region. This larger project includes several other sites in the area and has included UMD faculty Dr. Byron Steinman and Dr. William Daniels, UMD student Cole Barre, and USGS Research Geologist Dr. Jessica Rodysill.
