My best friend in the whole damn world turns 18 today.

Feels like yesterday I was hiding Elmo toys from you in Meijer and dragging you by your ankle in the pool. Max and I kicking your butt in backyard wiffleball or tricking you on Minecraft.

You probably hated me for years and years, but a mix of softball, Zach Bryan, and your unbeatable sense of humor grew us together, even being almost 1,400 miles apart.

Every night I end my prayers with you, asking God to protect you, tell you how much love I have for you. Asking he keep you safe, happy, and healthy. Guiding you to the highest heights, and to let you know you are more than your last name.

You had to grow up so fast, and it's not fair, but you did it. All the shit we've dealt with has been heaviest on your shoulders (maybe that's why yours got jacked up). You have taken all that, and have excelled beyond all of us.

We are all so proud of the things you have done, and through the tears and fears, you have blossomed into my favorite person in this world.

Your love for those around you, your sage wisdom, telling me when I'm going the wrong way. Your care for yourself and recognition of when you're being treated wrong. Above that, you are the funniest person I know. You can credit it to whatever or who ever, but it all came from you.

I love you, D. With all the hell we went through before you were born, we got far more Joy than mom and dad could've ever anticipated. Welcome to the adult world, sticker. You'll do just fine. Play Anyways, D.
