Shimmer Field

The final chapter in the 90-minute Harmonic Fields progression for deep focus.

We arrive in a glistening, high-frequency atmosphere—shimmering tones suspended over a stable harmonic floor. As with the entire series, the music evolves slowly and almost imperceptibly, engaging lower-level predictive pathways in the brain while leaving higher-order cognition free for sustained attention and deep work.

This balance—subtle change within a stable framework—aligns with how the brain processes sound: continuously forming and updating expectations, allowing focus to deepen without distraction .

Behind the scenes:
Shimmer Field blends vintage and modular synthesis, including the PPG Wave 2.2, Jupiter-8, and a CS-80–inspired voice, alongside instruments from Macbeth, Cwejman, and Modcan. The soundscape is drawn from winter waves on Lake Michigan, where floating ice crystals create a delicate, natural shimmer that mirrors the tonal world of the piece.

Shout-out to my colleague @coletterheude for the snap of the Solar Halo!

Thanks @coletterheude 😂 [Crackhead Modalities is the moniker for my morning routine: mobility, strength, meditation, and journaling. These are all the things necessary when you’re both in your 50’s and living in the time of Insanity. And bourbon…but that is later in the day.] ☕️
