When we think about 30x30, it’s easy to picture vast, remote public lands and rugged coastlines. But an important way to complement California’s 30x30 conservation efforts actually happens block by block—in schoolyards, parks, community gardens, and backyards across the state.

Growing native plants in our urban areas:
🐛 Support pollinators and local ecosystems
💧 Conserves water
☠️ Reduced pesticide reliance
🌳 Brings nature to our doorsteps

Yesterday, CNPS joined partners from across the state at the California Natural Resources Agency @30x30ca Partnership Summit where CNPS Director of Education and Horticulture Lilia Higgins (@colilaoptera), reflected on the ways the built environment and 30x30 goals come together. Our Biodiversity in Urban Gardens (BUG) project and Landscapes for Change campaign give cities and the people who live in them tangible ways to support California’s biodiversity.

As Lila says here: Imagine nature not ‘out there,’ but right *here*, starting with each of us. 🐝🌼

A bunch of beautiful plant people! 💚 Grateful to @californianativeplants for putting this conference together.

I work alone 99% of the time, so it was grounding and inspiring to be amongst colleagues. People with similar passions, unparalleled empathy, and a whole lot of new ideas.

LOVED meeting so many new friends at the conference! THANK YOU ALL for giving me a heaping spoonful of HOPE.

Shout out to @livokeefe & @westernwatergirl for having the foresight to bring in a content creator crew! @goldenstatenaturalist @diandramarizet @thenaturenut @fascinatedbyfungi @sacramentofoodforest

This experience planted numerous seeds for collaboration as we all try to “influence” our way to a better, greener, kinder world.

Prospering bacyards (Pb) is a community science project born from the Sinks: Places We Call Home exhibition presented by @shg1970 . Curated by @muromarvella featuring the work of @marugfe and @beatrizhjaramillo alongside amazing community partners, and part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: Art & Science Collide @pstinla initiative, the exhibition brought together passionate artists, scientists, and community members to explore how artists stage powerful environmental justice interventions through their art. Pb explored the potential of zeolite—a mineral that has shown to reduce lead contamination in backyards affected by the toxic legacy of the Exide Battery plant.
✨ Dive into the @prosperingbackyards final report to learn more about the project, the exhibition, and the scientific and community-building outcomes of the Pb Project.

Sacred. May we realise how sacred it all is. How pleasurable. How ever-new. How profound. How divine. How fierce. How soft. How courageous. X #Bali #Courage #Blessing #Ancestors #soft #fierce

Our ancestors are with us always.
The winds, the waters, the earth, the fire in our hearts.
The living kin around us,
Overflowing with love,
Song, dance, and wisdom,
For those that care to listen.

They call to us across time and space.
Our deities, our demons, our allies and kin,
Calling us forth to dance with them,
Across the seen & unseen.
The Sekala & Niskala.

Ever present,
If you only listen.
If you only look.
If you only let your heart be broken open
to all there ever was, is, and ever will be.

Love is the law

We have already made more observations and engaged more participants than in our 2024 @citnatchallenge!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Some cities still have a few more hours to go to make observations today, and of course more observations will be added over the next week as people upload what they found over the long weekend!

This weekend is the 10th anniversary of the City Nature Challenge — April 25-28th —where people all around the world will gather to document biodiversity using the community science app iNaturalist! It is a great opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the biodiversity in our urban environments! It is incredibly exciting and who knows what cool life we will find this year! Happy iNatting Everyone!
