Available now! VERNACULAR

🎉🎊🪩🪎💡🎛️

We have had the pleasure of working closely with the singular electronic artist @jlin_p over the past several years. In that time we’ve developed a shared musical vocabulary, a way of speaking with and through one another that has made her one of our most frequent collaborators and one of our dearest musical friends.

On VERNACULAR, we finally had the opportunity to perform together, creating an even more seamless blend of our creative voices and sonic worlds.

Mirroring this collection of Jlin’s work is new music from another musical creator whose penchant for quirkiness and unpredictability has called to us from across the borders of genre, @davidlongstreth. His band, @dirtyprojectors, has been stretching all of our ears and hearts since we were in our twenties, and while it was hard to know exactly what Dave would do with a percussion quartet, it was certain to be fantastical, unique, and compelling.

We round out this album with a short piece by an artist that ties all three of us (TCP, Jlin, Longstreth) together — @philipglass . Glass has collaborated with both Jlin and TCP on several projects, and he was an early inspiration for Longstreth. His musical language has informed all of ours, both individually and in these collaborations.

This is a really inspiring story and also a very sad story about when tremendous personal drive meets extraordinary geopolitical obstacles. Samia was an incredible person. We’re so happy her story is being told so beautifully by @teresarkrug and the whole team.

Also check out the brave and important work being done by @sosmediterranee — an organization that has saved the lives of hundreds of people just like Samia.

New single released today! Mvt 2 of Butterfly Dancing Over a Barrel 🦋

This piece was composed by @davidlongstreth for @thirdcoastpercussion last year. Check out the single now on all streaming services, and hear the full 5-movement work when TCP’s album VERNACULAR is released on October 23 🎧

We workshopped this piece together at TCP’s studio in Chicago. Swipe through for some videos of improvised sounds from our very first session together that found their way into the piece…

Many thanks to @carnegiehall for helping to commission the work 🙏🙏🙏🙏 TCP performs the work at Carnegie on March 6, and on tour around the world starting next month.

Tanis by Peter Martin (@honumartin)

This new piece was inspired by Bruce Goff’s piano rolls, which we’ve been featuring on our IG and YT all summer.

Peter exploded a fragment of a composition by Goff into this full fledged shredfest for 2 marimbas (actually it fits on 1 marimba) and 1 vibraphone. Full performance video on our YouTube channel 🚀

Exotica by Bruce Goff, arr. by David Skidmore

Another wild piece by this composer/architect/artist who was a figurehead of mid-century queer modernism.

Three Exaggerations by Bruce Goff, arr. by David Skidmore

Our month-long feature of composer/artist/architect Bruce Goff continues with this 3 movement work, originally written for player piano.

Much of this music is fiendishly difficult. It was all very meticulously crafted, and takes advantage of the player piano’s ability to create music that no single piano player could ever perform.

Full video available now on our YouTube channel, and the score is available for purchase as well!

This arrangement, like all of our arrangements of Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia, was inspired in part by the beautiful original arrangements created by Marco Antonio Guimarães for the Brazilian ensemble Uakti.
