Banner Peak 12,936’ SE Ridge cl.2/3
A wild and careful downclimb of the steep & loose cl.3/4 North Face of Mt Ritter made our next objective, Banner Peak, feel like a walk in the park. Back at the saddle between these 2 massive summits we ate a quick lunch and chatted with the only other climber we’d see all day before heading up the standard class 2/3 Southeast Ridge of Banner Peak where we found some fun optional harder scrambling right at the top! Banner Peak on its own via the Northwest Glacier is a great intro to glacial travel since the ice doesn’t get very steep on the side that reaches the easiest scramble up the peak. Overall this was a super sick linkup with 2 rad dudes that pushed a little beyond their comfort zones to do things they normally may not have thought possible! 🤘 🧗🏔

Mount Ritter 13,143’ North Face cl.3/4
One of the most classic routes in the High Sierra! John Muir’s first ascent route up the NE Glacier & N Face of Mt Ritter. After climbing Theodore Solomons route up from the west in 2020 it was awesome to return this year and tackle this much more serious route with 2 good friends. We tagged Ritter along with Banner Peak and a few other summits over the course of 5 days on a section hike through one of my fav parts of the Sierra High Route: Tuolumne Meadows to Mammoth Lakes. This route was much spicier than I had anticipated and I was very proud of my buds for sticking with me all the way up and down the steep snow and loose slippery rock walls! Turns out John Muir himself was too terrified to descend this line after climbing it so he found an easier way down the southeast slopes. You can now read his harrowing account of the first ascent of this climb online.

Uncle Sam Mountain 4766ft 🏔 🏝
This peak was surprisingly not named for the man on early American propaganda posters but for a Mexican cattle rancher who owned a huge portion of California in the mid 1800s. The mountain was recently very difficult to access but thanks to the hundreds of hours of hardwork by local volunteers, a trail is clear up to the last mile of steep climbing with light bushwhacking to the summit. On this trip we left a fresh register that I got to sign again on a dayhike with another buddy 2 weeks later and I’m happy to see it has since had a few more visitors using our route logged on peakbagger.
