When fiction meets life…

There’s a scene at the end of An Unexpected Journey where Bilbo says, “I do think the worst is behind us.”

Spoiler alert: he was wrong.

At the end of 2024, I dealt with injuries that sidelined me from the things I loved doing. For most of 2025, I dealt with extreme anxiety and depression. This year, I’ve focused on finding myself again. It hasn’t been easy, but there is a lot of hope.

One of the reasons The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings mean so much to me is that they remind me that even when the road is long, the burden is heavy, and hope feels far away, perseverance can carry us forward - that it’s ok to lean on the strength of others, and that sometimes the smallest light is enough to guide us home.

I’m still walking. And even though there will most likely be more challenges, I’m grateful for the journey ahead.
