Who knew Collin McKinney never actually saw the courthouse on the McKinney square? He died in 1861, more than a decade before it was built.

During her senior year of high school, Elizabeth Grace Mainor knew she wanted to keep dancing after graduation, but she wasn’t sure exactly how she wanted to go about it. So she took advantage of the dance program at Collin College, a community college near her home in Texas—an affordable, low-risk way to complete her core academic coursework while keeping up her technique and exploring options within the dance world.

She ended up getting “more than I ever could have imagined out of the experience,” she says. By fully immersing herself in the dance department and performing regularly, she found her artistry growing in ways she hadn’t expected. She’s now a dance major at her dream four-year college, Oklahoma City University.

Mainor isn’t the only one to be surprised by how much a community college can offer. Many people still assume that these schools have lower dance or academic standards, since they cost so much less than four-year degree programs and don’t have the same name recognition. But that stigma is misplaced.

این چنین فارغ از هیاهوی جهانم آرزوست
ذهنی حتی برای لحظه‌ای دور از شتابِ روزگار و دست شسته از جنگیدنِ با دنیا.
آرام و آرام و آرام.

This is my wish, free from the hustle and bustle of the world.
A mind, even for a moment, far from the rush of life and free from fighting the world.
Calm, calm, calm.

the final project 📸

several weeks ago, i signed up for a beginner photography course at collin college. i wanted to learn more about my camera and photography beyond what i'd been picking up from youtube and experimenting on my own.

i've officially finished the class, and i'm so glad i took it!

i created some photos i'm proud of that show progress, growth, and a little creativity. it's been fun looking back and seeing how i've started applying what i've learned.

even though it was a beginner course, we covered so much more than the exposure triangle and the basics you typically hear about on youtube.

camera RGB settings, how to evaluate photography equipment before buying it, the kelvin scale, white balance, diptychs and triptychs. which, by the way, i thought a triptych was a AAA map. if you grew up in the 80's and 90’s you know what i’m talking about.

i'm sure i would have eventually stumbled across these things on my own, but who knows how long that would've taken? possibly years!

there's something to be said for learning from someone who's passionate about their craft and genuinely wants to share that knowledge. our instructor created a comfortable environment where we could ask questions, experiment, and learn from one another.

one of my favorite parts was critiquing our photos. not just my own, but my classmates' work too. one question would lead to another, and before you knew it, we were discussing something entirely different. i learned so much from those conversations.

i use youtube, social media, and google to learn all kinds of things, and they can be great resources. but this class reminded me of the value of stepping outside of those spaces and learning directly from someone with experience.

i loved class so much, i signed up for another one!

sharing a few photos from my class. i'm proud of these, and i'm excited to keep learning.

stay curious. 📸
