Five years ago today, we lost Ma, my mother-in-law, Dolores, also affectionately known as Mama D.

I’m incredibly grateful for the sustaining grace of our Lord over these past five years. But I would be lying if I said losing Ma doesn’t still hurt.

Often, our most joyful moments, such as the births of our sons, Justus and Joel, are also accompanied by the thought, “I wish Ma were here,” or “Ma would have loved this.” Our hearts ache for her presence.

Sixteen years ago, on a random Friday night near Central Park West, @collinjacksonofficial and I wrote “Just Like You” in what felt like 30 minutes. The song is essentially a prayer to emulate the life of Christ.

Ma loved this song, though admittedly she may have been a little biased. She was, after all, our biggest fan. So, in her honor, it’s posted here.

Since her passing, the song has taken on a deeper meaning for me. When I hear it or play it now, I think of her. She reflected the life of Christ better than anyone I’ve known.

If Dolores blessed your life, share a memory in the comments. I’d love to remember her with you and rejoice together in a life well lived for the glory of God.

The end of a chapter… but the story is still being written.

Words cannot even express how grateful I am for all the memories, friendships and special moments I was able to share with you all! CT will always have a special in my heart! 🫶🏼

And now we turn the page… A new chapter awaits and I cannot wait for all the Lord will do.

A month into moving to New York City, I caught on fire. Like literally, my hair burnt up my back through my shirt and on my skin. I still have the scars on my arm and they look like a galaxy imprinted on me. It was the first weekend I met @elle_shabz and an apt way to set precedent for my journey in the city.

Unfortunately, I am bad at taking photos when I am having a good time. But New York City, you are the legend that they always said you are and that 12 year old me knew she wanted to be held by. You and every one of your people welcomed me, held space and taught me just how much Joie is in Vivre.. hehe.

As I close off my chapter in this city I want to say thank you. For all the adventures, the people I got to host in my home from home and all around the world, the people who hosted me. Each friend who came by and helped me see the beauty of the city like the first time i did in 2018 - with wander and awe. Before the rats, weird smells and almost being kicked in the face multiple times in the subway - which by the way, i will probably miss(in a couple of years). You are the city that taught me what a REAL hustler does to make their bread. You showed me that Black is bold, beautiful and artistic in so many ways. That we love on each other through art, food and community. You showed me how to love music for the sake of loving music. I got to sing at all hours of the day and do it with people who loved it just as much as me. I released my first musical project and you gave it so much love and heart. You gave me family, friends, lovers, mentors and students. You showed me how much God really loves his people - including me. You were a city that let me be whoever i chose to be.

New York, thank you for making me a better artist, lover and person. I hope I left you and your people at least somewhat better than I found them.

Till next time, my sweet
❤️🗽
