Solitude Sunday 🌳 🏕

My favorite way to relax, reset, & recharge is to go camping, hike & be in nature. 🌳

It was only for 24 hours but just what my brain & body needed to unwind & decompress. 🧠

Spending time in nature triggers a measurable neurological & physiological reset. 🌳

Neuroimaging & physiological research show that natural environments directly alter brain function & lower stress within a short amount of time. ⏳️

🌳When you step into nature, your brain undergoes several specific neurological shifts: 🧠

🌲Deactivation of the Amygdala:
The amygdala (the brain's threat-detection center responsible for fight-or-flight response) shows significantly decreased activity after time spent in nature, lowering your physiological stress levels.

🌲Reduced Brain Fatigue:
(Soft Fascination) Urban & digital environments require directed attention, which actively drains the prefrontal cortex. 🧠

🌲Nature's soft fascination:
Captivating stimuli like moving leaves or flowing water engages the brain effortlessly, allowing your cognitive focus systems to rest & restore. 🍂🍁

🌲Quieted Mental Rumination: Neuroimaging shows that nature exposure drops blood flow to the subgenual prefrontal cortex, the area linked to repetitive, negative self focused thinking & worry. 🧠

🌲Biochemical Balance:
Time spent in natural spaces measurably lowers your primary stress hormone (cortisol) while boosting feel good neurotransmitters like serotonin. 💚

3 Minutes:
Measurable shifts in stress & brain activity begin within a few minutes of stepping into a green space. 🌳

20 Minutes:
A short, tech-free walk outside is enough to drop cortisol & clear mental fog. 🧠

2 Hours Weekly:
Research suggests accumulating around 120 minutes of nature exposure per week optimizes overall health & well-being. 💚

Get outside 🌲🥾
Inhale & exhale 🌬
Get grounded 👣

Frida had a mammary gland tumor and had surgery to remove it. Biopsy results in a week or so. Big thanks to Dr. Jessica Barrera and the staff at Raintree Animal Hospital in Timnath. And no, I don’t leave her outside tied to a weight except to run in the house for something.

October 19, Monday 6:00-7:30 PM Drop-In Story Lab. Old Town Library in Fort Collins. FREE! Come with a true & personal story or “a concept” of a story. Get feedback and (hopefully) meet other storytellers. First attempt at creating a story collective of people interested in engaging with their stories and sharing them for feedback. Just show up!!! Flipping back on the field at 46 as a CSU cheer alum at Homecoming 2026 in front of 41,000 fans was a huge dream come true! ✨🤸📣

26 years ago, I walked off this field thinking my flipping days on game day turf were behind me. For the last few Homecomings, I stuck to back handsprings on turf and saved flipping for the spring floor, unsure if my back could handle the impact.

At 46, stepping onto Canvas Stadium and trusting my body to flip again felt like nothing short of a miracle. 🙏

God’s plans are always better than ours, so I chose faith over fear… and I did it. 🥹

I’m honestly just crazy happy and proud of myself. But more than the tumbling pass, this moment was about something bigger: showing every young woman on that sideline that our strength doesn’t fade with age, and our dreams never expire.

Sometimes the dream you thought was behind you is still waiting for you to come back and chase it. ✨🐏
Thank you, @csucheerleading, for letting me cheer and tumble with you!

Charlie received a game day invite to the @csufootball game yesterday. It was an incredible experience and we enjoyed every minute of it. Much appreciation to the CSU crew for the incredible hospitality and to @coachsintim for his role in making connections. I’m already a 1x CSU dad. I wouldn’t mind being a 2x CSU dad. Go Rams!

This isn’t the life I planned but since it’s been given to me as a gift then I’m going to give every ounce of energy to make it the best life ever for my daughter, my family, my friends, my community and for all #frrs1l kids! I am a mom to a severely disabled #Frizzle kid, I Co-founded an organization @hope4frrs1l where I run our gene therapy program and hope to change the lives of Frizzle kids through treatment of gene replacement therapy. Our treatment technology has the hope to change gene therapy for all neuro diseases. We are honored to pave the way. We own, manage, make all decisions and fund our program as an organization. It’s very very hard work, but we won’t ever give up on helping our kids get back the life and movement they lost because of their disease.

Life is hard, but also filled with joy, all at the same time. It’s exhausting but also exciting to develop a possible treatment. My life is not what I expected, I’m a different person because of it, I’ve grown/stretched/learned so much and I hope to use it all to make life better for Frizzle kids, neuro diseases, and the world!

This is my life… it’s crazy and not normal… but I will never stop fighting to do good and make the most of what I’ve been given!
