TORIE | My #ShittyFirstDraft

If you follow my stories, you might know that this year, I’ve challenged myself to write a full draft of a novel. Initially, I thought it was going to be about motherhood, centered upon weekly library story times (which have been foundational to my sense of community, first in IA and now in VT) and exploring loss of identity… Now, though, it’s expanded to also explore queerness, small-town culture, drag story times, and more.

Honestly, it’s just been really fun to get to know my characters and watch them do things. I kind of forgot the immense power in storytelling: once you have your people, you can follow them around and do things to their worlds and see what happens. I’m really enjoying that part, as much as I’m not always enjoying reliving some of the challenges of early motherhood, TBH.

I’ve been wanting to write a book like this for five years, even when I was working on my dissertation (lolz the ultimate distraction amirite), but for the first time, I’ve been prioritizing two hours each Tuesday morning to sit down and do the damn thing. And now that I’ve reached 26k words, I’m more than a quarter of the way toward my 100k goal!

Who knows if and when this story will see the light. As I told a friend recently, my goal is a #ShittyFirstDraft (inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s famous quote, “The first draft of anything is shit”), then a #MediocreSecondDraft, then a #MehThirdDraft, then we’ll go from there 😂. Regardless of what happens, I’m loving the journey.

I asked in my stories if people wanted me to include more about my #ShittyFirstDraft journey, and the answer was a resounding (and frankly, a terrifying) “yes!” so here I am.

And if you have any questions, let me know. In the meantime, I’ll see ya in stories sometime next week! (Summer break, aka full-time mom life, starts next week, so I’m still trying to figure out when my new dedicated weekly writing time will be).

And if you’ve been wanting to write a book, let this be your sign to stop putting it off because just showing up a few hours each week, prioritizing it like you would a job or any other formal commitment, is how you get it done!
