this is my new year’s eve

of the rebirth

the comfort you have held

I know it’s now a joke of sorts but I think about the Roman Empire almost daily.

There’s something about the history, honour, & discipline that I find captivating. Obviously no society is without flaws and I’m not trying to romanticize a civilization built on conquest but to me many characteristics of Roman culture rest on pillars of strong character - integrity, courage, & loyalty - and I often ponder Roman culture versus a lot of our society’s overwhelming adoption of convenience culture. I’m not a historian and my comparison is loose at best but you get where I’m going with this.

Convenience culture is prioritizing laziness, selfishness, and apathy over growth, accountability, and doing what’s right even when it’s uncomfortable, scary, or, well, inconvenient; whether it’s use of basic manners, following through on a commitment, or standing up to injustice.

No doubt Roman culture had its convenience elements but nowadays it feels like we have become very good at treating avoidance as virtuous. I wonder if my perceived erosion of character in society is due to a collective lack of self awareness (or maybe too much doom scrolling) or if people simply don’t care anymore if their word actually means something?

Maybe I read too many of Marcus Aurelius’ journals but I’ve always thought that being inconsistent or unreliable or cowardly was a stain people wouldn’t want on their character, yet people be out here proudly walking around like they’ve never heard of soap.

Every person is solely responsible for maintaining their quality of character which is a profound freedom and I wonder if this understanding has gotten lost in the chaos of endless accessibility to options, entitlement, and perhaps that so much interaction takes place through a screen that people forget there is an actual human being on the other side?

Roman culture was far from perfect but my perhaps naive self keeps thinking that maybe it’s time to revisit some of history’s playbooks.

Anyways, every year around my birthday I find myself feeling introspective and this is what I’ve been thinking about this last month. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go watch Gladiator for the 1000th time.

Po 17 letech jsem znovu navštívila v městě Římě. 🤩

Nejvíc mě potěšily a líbily se mi noční efekty v Koloseu. 😍✨

Ale na druhou stranu se tam stala tragédie. Určitě víte, co se v Koloseu stalo. :/

Dne 24. 9. jsem měla naplánovanou prohlídku Kolosea zevnitř, ale bohužel bylo v tomto termínu pro veřejnost zavřeno. 😥

Ale nevadí mi to, respektuji rozhodnutí pořadatelů Kolosea. 🙂
