They came for the pizza. I came for the garden.

Coltivare’s been on White Oak since 2014, and somehow it still feels like a secret backyard. Figs on the tree, passion fruit flowers galore, and two bowls of pasta I’m still thinking about.

If you live in the Heights and haven’t been, I don’t know what to tell you. You should have been there yesterday 😂🤭

🌿 This Houston restaurant grows its own ingredients!

Located in the Heights, Coltivare Pizza & Garden @coltivarehtx has been a Houston staple since opening in 2014. Founded by chef Ryan Pera and restaurateur Morgan Weber, this Italian-inspired restaurant is known for its seasonal cooking, house-made pastas, and wood-fired pizzas.

One of the coolest things about Coltivare is its approximately 3,000-square-foot garden, where the team grows herbs, vegetables, and other seasonal ingredients used in the kitchen. The owners even faced months of permitting delays because they wanted to preserve the garden rather than turn the space into additional parking!

🍽️ Here’s what we tried:

🍗 Chicken wings with chiles, lemon verbena, and basil

🌽 Fried heirloom okra with tomatoes and black garlic aioli

🍝 Tagliatelle verde with Texas wild boar ragù, fennel, lemon, and pecorino Toscano

🍕 Wild Gulf shrimp pizza with spinach, spicy tomato sauce, black olives, and chiles

🍗 Wood-grilled chicken with agrodolce, pine nuts, and pickled grapes

🍰 Roasted pumpkin crostata with mascarpone cream

My favorites? The tagliatelle verde was the standout savory dish! The green pasta paired beautifully with the rich, savory Texas wild boar ragù, balanced by fennel, lemon, and pecorino Toscano.

The dessert favorite was the roasted pumpkin crostata, but my cousins @carmelosingh & @splashdaddy did not agree. The buttery, flaky pastry paired with the seasonal pumpkin filling and mascarpone cream made for an incredible dessert.

The wild Gulf shrimp pizza was another highlight, combining sweet shrimp, spicy tomato sauce, briny olives, and a chewy, beautifully blistered crust.

If you’ve ever been to a FloState event you know that we really do keep things in flow. Everything comes together with ease and joy and no stress. We’ve never done anything outside of the studio, so Sunset Swim was our first ever semi-public event! FloState really is built on community and everyone coming together to bring things into fruition from concept to creation. This go around it was for the book launch for Amari Sun by co-founder Shani Michelle. But the party wouldn’t have been possible without the whole FloState community. Here’s a few BTS photos leading up to the event.

The plan changed many times but it came out perfectly! To start off we tried a lot of Italian food places and ate a lot of gelato and tiramisu. In the end we wound up going a different direction but it was a lot of fun trying Italian food places around town!

Costco runs to price food after we decided to change the aperitivo menu.

Hitting up book events and wound up finding the sweetest bookish merch vendor that came thru for the book launch! Shout out to @shelftherapy_co

We found our new fav crispy pizza spot at @coppaosteriahouston

Made bookmarks and stickers that businesses like @harazpearland let us put out on the counter.

Book editor @tired_24 helped @writtenbyshanimichelle finish strong while she simultaneously planned the party and promoted the book.

Launched the website and celebrated the opening of pre-sales. @nothingbundtcakes

Eating this ridiculously delicious salad from @coltivarehtx We also decided that arancini had to be on the menu after trying theirs. The good sis @hawley2016_ blessed us with her culinary skills and made them fresh at the event.

@cottoecrudoenoteca became a new favorite spot!

Toured several places and found the perfect place to have the event at @arriveriveroaks

Designed the cutest bags with the help of @nicolioo0 who was in the background supporting snd helping the event from afar.

Got the official book banner made!

Custom balloons for razzle dazzle!

Had a blast making and coloring Amari Sun coloring pages.
