This is a classic east bay rail that has been gone for over a decade now. This rail was at the former Emeryville High School located on the corner of San Pablo and 47th. The original school was built in 1920, and was later replaced by a newer structure. This new building was home to the blue rail. Crusty, cobblestone runup plagued this rail until somebody laid a path of bondo on the runup, eliminating the need for wood. You can date the clips there by what the runup looked like.

Emeryville has one of the smallest and most mismanaged school districts in the area. In 1993 they appointed J.L. Handy as the leader for EUSD. Handy came from Compton School District and was fired for running up a $5 million dollar deficit. He proceeded to do the same in Emeryville, which resulted in the system being forfeited to the state. I’ll spare the details, if you are interested there is plenty to read online about this. In the 2000s he was ousted from his position.

With the school district struggling financially, the city crafted a plan to salvage the school system by consolidating the 3 schools into one and packaging it with community services. The idea was so unique that it was actually illegal and required a change to the California Education code to allow a City-School district partnership at this level. This sparked the creation of Emeryville Center for Community Life.

The school, with this beloved rail was demolished around 2013 and a new school was constructed and opened in 2016 that housed a K-12 school, a dental & health clinic, afterschool programs and a community center. Below are some of my favorite clips at this spot

Pregnancy has been many truths existing all at once- it’s both not at all what I expected but also entirely what I expected. What I’ve found the most interesting is how completely … normal it has felt. When I watch other people go through life changing moments I think Wow! Spectacular! What that must feel like! But in my own journey these moments always feel so - natural I guess. Less like a milestone and more like an unceremonious turning of a page. I’m beyond grateful for it… I’ve found these past 8 months to be deeply peaceful, comforting. Fuck, but also powerful, sometimes overwhelming. An unsurprising metaphor for life… this river of learning, experiencing, dreaming, embodying, with love as the current.

Even considering that I do not have the words, the language of this sweet stillness (which I think is because there is no unanimous experience), I feel compelled to share. Like most choices women make, every step of pregnancy (& motherhood) seems to invite unsolicited judgement; culturally, politically, interpersonally, etc. Thus, talking about it, and finding my own truths within this transition has been fascinating/important to me. There’s so much to untangle, learn. For now, I’m living in a fun spectrum of empowering & isolating, psychedelic & completely basic, green juice & cheeseburgers. A private, simmering gift to challenge an expansion of my mind, heart, body, soul!

So, with this growing heart & belly - I patiently wait to hold our little guy in my arms - to watch him held in Cocos - and in return, I hope to be a river of grounding presence, of peace & comfort, for them, for always.

Some sweet moments from our wedding :) I planned this baby in ~7 months while working & in grad school & we celebrated on a warm August day, 1 month after our 7 year anniversary, and 1 day after my parents 43rd anniversary with all of our BFFs at our favorite neighborhood pizza & wine spot. We were married by my grandpa, and marked the special moments with The Cure, Ted Lucas, The Velvet Underground, Van Morrison, & Cornell Campbell. I can’t believe how time flies. I still call coco my boyfriend and I may never call myself a wife lol but im very lucky to be his. And we are both very lucky to have you guys. Love and peace to all!!!!!! Thank you to the talented @brandonscottherrell for the photos & to everyone who picked up a disposable cam

Summer 🐚 always flies by

I just got a 90 min massage at my fav thai spot after doing my morning res walk & drinking a gget coffee & im feeling really light & free today - realized it’s exactly how my summer has felt— regardless of finishing grad school three weeks ago and planning a wedding in 7 months ! WOW!
I guess I’m thinking about how weight on the shoulders and heart doesn’t have to erase the feeling of hope - and how I try and often fail to balance the whole thing out. Also about how I feel the most lust for life in the morning - the most excited about ideas/dreams — and somehow by night time frustrated & maybe blue/stuck... What is that? Is that just the definition of a morning person?

Just daydreaming on this Friday afternoon :) hope you’ve all been well!

got to say yes to the sweetest question he ever did ask on the property my mom grew up on - nestled behind my grandpas church, in front of the beach my grandpa and Mimi now rest, and on the island that throughout my life has taught my heart true peace... the heart that I now get to anchor to the kindest person I’ve ever, ever known. Pinch me!!!!!
