When I first came back to Australia, I felt completely out of place. As Mikki put it, I was shell shocked. After unexpectedly spending a year in Central America, I returned to a life that felt familiar but didn’t quite fit anymore. I had so much to process, and it showed.

One of my first weekends back, Mikki took me for a walk around New Farm. She didn’t try to fix me; she just saw me. In the middle of my chaos, she was my calm. A reminder of who I was and how I belonged here. Afterward, in true Mikki style, we ended up at a boujee restaurant, drinking red wine and sharing bruschetta at 3pm on a Sunday. Sitting there, we talked about the life we wanted to build, one without what ifs.

That day, we promised ourselves something more, and I think we’ve stayed true to it. We’ve chased what matters, embraced the moments, and trusted that the best is still ahead.

To my darling Mik, thank you for holding my hand when I needed it most. You’ve been my rock more times than I can count, and I’m going to feel so lost without you nearby. But I already can’t wait for our next boujee wine somewhere in the world 🤍

I can’t believe I only have 12 days left in Australia. Time moves so fast, and life keeps evolving in ways I never expected. Before I head back to San Juan, I’m making a stopover in California for Thanksgiving because one of our old exchange students lives there and invited me to join her family for the holiday.

When I was in high school, my family hosted exchange students. @shannon_mathias was a special one. She stayed with us for six months and became part of our family. Hosting exchange students- and later going on my own exchange to Canada- was a huge catalyst for my love of travel and living abroad. Those experiences opened my eyes to life beyond Brisbane and I’ve been drawn to travelling the world ever since.

At 17, I visited Shannon’s family after my exchange, and they took me in like one of their own. We have stayed close, even after all these years and miles apart. Now, 14 years later, I can’t wait to be back in the States and share this special time with them.

Being home in Australia has been grounding and refreshing. I feel reconnected with myself and more driven than ever. I’m excited to keep using this space as a creative outlet, sharing my journey as I work towards bigger goals 🌺
