A Columbia dermatologist has developed ways to engineer other cells to find and eliminate the misguided B cells. If successful, the therapy could be adapted for many more autoimmune conditions.

Hi, I’m Dr. Leah Ansell. I’m a board-certified dermatologist, a mom of three, and an ”older millennial” who is reluctantly stepping into Instagram.

I didn’t plan to be here. But lately, I’ve noticed a growing gap between what I know to be true in dermatology and what’s being shared online. There is a lot of noise, a lot of filters, and not a lot of nuance. I want to help change that.

This account is about offering real, evidence- based dermatology, the kind I give my patients, my friends, and my family. Grounded in science and balanced with real life.

A little about me:
I grew up in the Chicago-area in a medical family. My mom went to medical school after I was born. My dad took me on house calls and medical mission trips across the world. My grandfather was an OB-GYN. I studied at Dartmouth, Northwestern, and Columbia, where I trained in dermatology and served as Chief Resident. I started my career in New York City, learning from my mentor- Ellen Gendler, MD. Today, I practice outside NYC in Rye, New York, where I live with my husband (an ICU/critical care doctor) and our three kids.

I am on faculty at Columbia and teach Resident Cosmetic Clinic. My life is a busy mix of work/running after my kids/reading journal articles at night. I believe the balance of academic rigor and everyday life makes me a better doctor and keeps my skills cutting edge. It also helps me understand my patients in a deeper, more personal way.

In dermatology, I approach skin with both medical insight and artistic care; always with long-term health and natural results in mind.

I hope this page helps you feel more informed and more empowered. Let me know what you want to learn about. I’m here to share what’s real, helpful, and worth your time.

⚕️🌟 We are proud to share that Dr. Paul Nghiem, Chair of UW Dermatology and Director of the #MC3Institute, was formally inducted into the prestigious Association of American Physicians #AAP at the organization’s annual meeting on April 26 in Chicago.

This distinguished honor recognizes Dr. Nghiem’s pioneering role in understanding the immunobiology of Merkel cell carcinoma #MCC, which has led to markedly more effective treatments as well as new ways to detect recurrences earlier.

July 1 is a big date for young physicians. It marks the first day that med school graduates, newly minted as doctors, start another 3-7 year program called Residency to train in their particular specialty.

What they should tell every new doctor about to start:
1. Success boils down to these 2 things: work hard and be nice.
2. Nurses and staff are lifesavers. At this point, they have been in your field longer than you, respect them and you’ll thank yourself.
3. Microhabits pay off MAJOR. After work, it’s easy to be tired and do nothing. Rest is important, but do a little bite sized piece of reading every evening and you will be a LOT farther than your peers. Read 3 pages in a textbook about that disease you saw today, or read 1 article. A little bit CONSISTENTLY will take you far. I found reading about a medical condition I saw that day made it “stick” better in my brain than starting from page 1 of that textbook.

My first day as a dermatology resident (11 years ago!) I moved from the Midwest to New York City and didn’t know a soul. I was intimidated, nervous, and definitely feeling the imposter syndrome. NYC was a major culture shock for your midwest girl. BUT I matched at my dream program @columbiaderm and after all that work in med school, I was finally on my way to becoming a dermatologist.
Fast forward 3 years, I had met the BEST people, learned I *could* cut in the city that never sleeps 🍎, and made so many amazing memories along the way.
