I spent 10 years as an International Super Model & these are my top 8 backstage etiquette for models. As I like to call it, 10 years backstage taught me things no agency ever put in writting

Rule 1
Arrive ready to work, not ready to be discovered.
Hair and skin prepped. Bag packed. Ego checked at the door. Backstage rewards professionals, not personalities.

Rule 2
Your rack is not your identity.
Whatever look you’re handed, wear it well. The best models make the designer’s vision shine, not their own opinion of the outfit.

Rule 3
Silence is a skill.
Backstage moves fast and loud. The models who get called back know when to speak, when to listen, and when to just stand still and let the team work.

Rule 4
Protect the next girl’s spot too.
Don’t hog the mirror, the steamer, or the dresser’s attention. Backstage is a shared clock. Everyone’s on it.

Rule 5
Never critique another model’s body, face, or walk. Ever.
Not to her. Not about her. The room remembers who made backstage feel unsafe.

Rule 6
Say thank you to everyone, not just the people who can hire you.
Dressers, hair, makeup, PAs. They talk to each other. Your reputation is built in rooms you’re not in.

Rule 7
Complaints stay outside the venue.
Tired, hungry, uncomfortable shoes? Handle it quietly. A model who visibly complains backstage gets remembered for the complaint, not the walk.

Rule 8
Leave the space better than you found it.
Fold what you borrowed. Clean your station. Backstage etiquette isn’t about being liked. It’s about being trusted with the next booking.

Which one was relatable for you? Drop a number below.

The best models aren’t just easy to shoot. They’re easy to work with.
10 years in this industry taught me that a great shoot is isn’t just about the shot but how everyone feels when it’s over! A great shoot is built by everyone in the room, and how you treat them shows up in the final images whether you realize it or not.

Here are 10 things I do to make my team feel valued, every time.

Tip 1
I learn names before the shoot starts.
Not just the photographer’s. The assistant’s, the PA’s, the second makeup artist’s. Everyone hears their own name at least once.

Tip 2
I say thank you out loud, in the moment, not just at the end.
“That blend is perfect” lands differently mid-shoot than a generic thank you when everyone’s already packing up.

Tip 3
I ask people about their work, not just my own.
“How long have you been doing hair?” tells someone I see them as a person with a craft, not a station I move through.

Tip 4
I stay patient during setup and technical delays.
Lighting issues and outfit changes aren’t anyone’s fault. My energy during downtime tells the team what kind of person they’re working with.

Tip 5
I give credit publicly when a look comes together.
If the stylist nailed it, I say so in front of the room, not just to them privately.

Tip 6
I check in on people who look stretched thin.
A quick “you good?” to an assistant running on no breaks costs me nothing and means something to them.

Tip 7
I ask before I touch anything on set.
Props, tools, garments. Asking first shows respect for people’s setups and their process.

Tip 8
I match energy without demanding attention.
If the room is calm and focused, I don’t bring chaos. If the room needs lifting, I bring warmth, not noise.

Tip 9 & 10
I remember people between shoots, and I show it when I see them again.
A message after a hard day. A “great working with you” tag when the images go live. Appreciation that only shows up on set isn’t appreciation. It’s performance.
That’s how a team becomes a team you keep working with.

Talent gets you booked. Collaboration gets you rebooked.
10 things I do on every shoot as a Top Model to make sure designers, makeup artists, and creative directors get their best work out of me, and I get the best out of them. After all a photo shoot’ success, is not just for me, but for the whole creative team.

Save this if you work in front of a camera or lead a shoot.

Rule 1
I show up already understanding the concept.
I study the mood board before I arrive. That way the shoot builds momentum instead of starting with explanations.

Rule 2
I let the creative director lead, full stop.
Even when I have ideas, I don’t argue for my vision over theirs. It’s their name on the campaign, not mine.

Rule 3
I never tell the makeup artist how to do their job.
Not the blend, not the shade, not the technique. I trust the artist I was booked to work with.

Rule 4
I give feedback only when asked, and I keep it short.
“Can we try it a shade warmer?” lands better than a lecture on color theory.

Rule 5
I adjust my body to the lens, not the other way around.
If the photographer wants a different angle, I move. I don’t make them repeat themselves.

Rule 6
I read the room’s energy before I speak.
A tense set doesn’t need my opinion. It needs me to hit my mark and stay easy to work with.

Rule 7
I ask questions instead of making assumptions.
“What feeling are we going for in this frame?” gets me further than guessing and getting it wrong on camera.

Rule 8
I stay flexible when the concept shifts mid-shoot.
Creative direction changes fast. My job is to adapt without making it a whole conversation.

Rule 9 + 10
I protect everyone’s time and I say thank you before I leave.
No arguing. No showing anyone how to do their job. No walking out without acknowledging the team that made the shot happen.
That’s how you get invited back.

At the @calgaryblackfilmfest Calgary Black Film Festival, I had the honor of showing up in more ways than one.

My stunning makeup was done by my incredible friend @comakeupartistry who not only holds a master’s degree and is a seasoned consultant but also embraces creativity as a form of expression.

We are all more than one title—and that’s what representation is all about. Whether in our careers or creative outlets, showing up fully is key.

Here’s to multidimensional brilliance and to lifting each other up!

Every year, I have the honor of stepping onto the red carpet at the Calgary Black Film Festival—not just for the glam, but to embody representation.

I strive for visibility, and this week, we celebrated Black voices on screen—stories that push boundaries and inspire.

From award-winning premieres to breakthrough local talent, these films remind us why representation matters—especially in the Black community.

It’s not just a festival; it’s a platform for change—and I’m proud to walk with purpose.
