OTD 13 years ago, Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson fight one of the greatest bouts in MMA history at UFC 165, which Jones edging out Gus to retain the UFC Light Heavyweight Title.

This was Jones’ sixth consecutive defense of his title, breaking the UFC LHW record. It remains one of his most controversial decision victories (alongside his defeat of Dominick Reyes at UFC 247), and among all title fights in UFC history.

The most competitive Light Heavyweight Title fight we’ve ever seen… who do you think won? 🤔

3 years ago today, we got our last non-PPV title fight, and it was a CONTROVERSIAL one. Alexa Grasso defended the women’s flyweight title against longtime former champ Valentina Shevchenko. Grasso had submitted Shevchenko in their first fight, becoming the first fighter to finish the divisional GOAT.

Part 2 infamously ended in a split draw. It was just the sixth UFC title fight to end in a draw, and the second one in 9 months (after Ankalaev vs. Blachowicz).

The decision prompted the UFC to book a third fight, marking the first women’s UFC trilogy ever. It ended in Shevchenko finally taking her belt back in a UD win at UFC 306.

Their second meeting was razor close. 12 of the top MMA media outlets via MMA Decisions scored the fight for Grasso, while 11 scored it for Shevchenko. None scored it a draw.

Who do you think won this fight? ⬇️

A little late with this, but 3 years ago yesterday, Sean Strickland shocked the MMA world, dethroning Israel Adesanya as a +500 underdog.

One of the biggest upsets in title fight history. Strickland became just the second man to beat Adesanya at middleweight.

And then, just a few months ago, he did it again, in an even BIGGER upset, against Khamzat Chimaev. 🤯

JAMES JOHNSON’S MMA CAREER! 16-year NBA veteran & ‘BIG3’ Rookie of the Year James Johnson spoke on his 20-0 kickboxing & 7-0 MMA record & answered if he could beat Jon Jones or not 🗣️

“I have 7 fights in MMA. I loved it… I grew up doing that. For me it was my first favorite sport — my first love. To this day, I love it more than basketball… I got nothing but love & respect to Jon Jones. It’s just me being who I am. I’m confident. Basketball; I’m good at, but, I was better at fighting.”

Johnson said he was BETTER at MMA & fighting! 😳🥊

On this day last year, Paul Craig retired from MMA.

The accomplishments speak for themselves. One of the most respected submission artists at light heavyweight we’ve ever seen and a foundational part of Scottish MMA. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Outside of MMA, Craig claimed multiple BJJ titles between 2013 and 2015. Thanks for all the memories.
