Congratulations to Maria Genevieve Hitchings, associate professor in Communication Design, on the successful exhibit Rethinking Turf: Seeing the Invisible through Illustration at the Harrison Public Library in Westchester County.

The exhibit featured a series of illustrated prints designed to advocate for more sustainable and pollinator-friendly land management practices and to challenge notions of beauty in our natural urban and suburban landscape.

I graduated college!! 🎓✨

I OFFICIALLY graduated with my degree in Communication Design and it only took me 2.5 years. (I don’t think I would’ve believed if you told me this is how my story would go)

Funny enough, getting fired from my job in fashion was the best thing that ever happened to me. At the time, it felt like the end of the world, but it pushed me to finally go to college. As of Spring 2023, my life completely changed course. I have never been more grateful for getting fired in my life.

In these 2.5 years at @citytechcuny , my work ethic was tested and I became a person I’m genuinely proud of. In the last year, I researched, wrote, and illustrated a book about keystone species in Caribbean Fore Reefs that is now ready to publish ‼️(I already have 5 more books ready to go) So now begins the riveting journey of finding an agent and getting published 👀📖

The @comd_citytech department opened doors for me that I never thought were possible. I had opportunities to compete in an advertising competition with global health advertising agencies, judge an advertising competition, collaborate on social media with Adobe, table at MoCCA Fest as President of Ink Club, and participate in workshops with leaders in the illustration and design industries. The opportunities I’ve had while living in New York have truly changed my life trajectory.

Most importantly, I would not have graduated this quickly or successfully without the unwavering support of my family, my professors’ expertise and the friends who supported me through every Adobe crash 🥲

Now this chapter is closed, I’m moving back to Austin next week 🩵 I’m so thankful for my parents and my boyfriend @markmunden_ for helping me move across the country and back to Texas. Back home.

To my mom, thank you for finding City Tech’s Communication Design program. To my dad, thank you for unconditionally supporting me. Thank you both for always picking up the phone when I call.

And to New York, thank you for every challenge and every opportunity 🗽✨

"A #posterdesign, out of many, that I created where the goal is to design joy. I was inspired by a statement that, as artists, graphic designers, and illustrators, we have the power to shape how people feel and perceive the world. If each of us takes even a few minutes to create something positive or uplifting, we can truly make a better tomorrow. Embracing that idea and creating posters meant to inspire and bring a small smile. This piece, in particular, serves as a friendly reminder to keep your head up and you don’t need to stay glued to the ground all the time."

Kicking off the NYC x AI Design Hackathon today at @comd_citytech @cunyedu ⚡

The student hackers will be creating solutions for NYC Subway, this isn’t just about the visual campaigns, it’s about behavior, creativity, system, and how AI reshapes the way we design for commuters in NYC.

Grateful to have an incredible group of judges shaping the conversation, from Amazon, Google, and AKQA, bringing real-world perspective into the room. And to our mentors—designers and builders actively working at the edge of AI, thank you for guiding, challenging, and elevating every team in this space over this weekend!
